DirectX 8 dead zone?

by Marc Collin » Fri, 12 Jan 2001 13:03:58

Hi,

Does DX8 have the dreaded dead zone built in to it?  I have eliminated it in
version 7 with the DXTweaker from Logitech.  Does this utility work with 8
or is it needed?

I won't upgrade until I am sure I can continue to have my smooth steering
and pedal response...

Thanks,

Marc.

Question: why would you want to install directx 8.0..?
Please stick with version 7 and wait a few more months....

Datoner....

Well for one, GP3 is supposed to be much better with DX8 (I installed it in
the hope my Voodoo 2 would work with it... I now have a GeForce2 MX :-). Of
course, it's almost impossible to remove.

I take your point about the "latest, greatest" versions of DirectX though.

I will firmly second that advice - when I installed DX7, my joystick
port would never recognise any controller connected, and I had to wipe
and re-install Windows to go back to DX6 until DX7a came out.
Very, very wary of DX8 (especially as I've got an Aureal soundcard!).

DirectX 8 dead zone?

Could someone answer my question?  I don't need advice about being cautious
with DirectX upgrades--why would I be asking this in the first place if I
wasn't cautious?  I don't need people telling me to not upgrade--I have
upgraded every version from DX3 to 7 without a hitch so far.  If your system
is configured properly and you have up-to-date hardware and drivers, DX is
rarely going to cause a problem.  But we have a specific realism concern
here on r.a.s. with the dead zone issue.  That's all I am asking about.

Marc.

Marc, I don't know if this will help, but I've been using DX8 for quite some
time with no noticable difficulties. I really can't say much about it's
affect on the deadzone though, as I have been using DX Tweak on my system to
eliminate any deadzone.
