VROC/GSB - Can host but not join...???

by Kevin Caldwel » Fri, 16 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I need help once again! I have a new computer - 300A at 450 - and it is
working very well, except for one thing. When I try to join a race through
VROC, GSB, or direct to the IP address, something goes wrong. GPL boots
fine, I get past the connection window, it says welcome, but when it
switches to the screen where the race cover usually appears, and the green
button to go to the pits, it just sits there. I don't get the race card, or
the race type, practice length etc., and eventually it boots me back to the
multiplayer connection window.

I've hosted several races, with up to 15 players, through GSB and VROC, with
no problems. I have a cable connection, and it has been pretty good in the
past. I can still join using the old computer with a new graphics card,
which is networked with the new one, so it is obviously something with my
new machine.

I've tried running at 300 MHz, connecting the cable modem directly to the
computer instead of through the hub, got the new version of GSB, re-did my
VROC set-up, checked my core.ini...

It is a full GPL install. I did copy all my player files, sound file, etc.,
over from my old computer.

Computer details: 300A on a ABIT BH-6 (300, or 450. Makes no difference).
Hercules Thriller 8M AGP. 128M RAM. 3COM Fast Ethernet card. SB Live! Value
OEM. W98 fresh install on a new HD.

Thanks in advance for your help!

From your description it'd guess that your new machine (or the port on
the hub, rather) is either masqueraded or something else which your
old computer is not. I've heard that hosting is possible behind a fw
while joining is not... Have you tried connecting the new machine to
the hub port to which the old machine is attached?
Just a thought,

uwe

This is just a 'shot in the dark'...  See if your cable modem is (or can
be) assigned an IP address (for your 'internal-private' network not from
your ISP).  It is just possible that there is something in the chipset
on your new MB that may require that the cable modem's IP be included in
the TCP/IP setup of your NIC card as a gateway.  I ran into something
similar where I was hooking up a "new" machine to a WAN and for some
reason on this machine (and this machine only), I had to enter the IP
address of the router (which is sorta what your cable modem is) as a
gateway in order for TCP/IP packets to flow properly.  As I said this is
just a shot in the dark, but I am sure you have been shooting blind
already.

Good Luck and keep us posted...

%hanks to Michael, and JB (forgot your name, sorry!), for their personal
help on the GPL Forum. I have it working now. It was the drivers for my 3Com
Ethernet card. The ones Win98 supplies are old, and while they work with the
3Com Fast Ethernet card and an ABIT LX-6 board (old computer), they don't
work with an ABIT BH-6 MB. Well, they work well enough to host races, and
surf the net, etc., but not well enough to join races.

I loaded the new 3Com drivers, and I can join races again. I also changed
the NIC card PCI slot, so that might have had something to do with it.

Thanks again!

Ooops! Spoke to soon. Managed to join a couple of races last night, but
today it is back to the way it was. I'll try the other NIC...

One more thing to try (and it's not as hard as yanking cards or
installing new drivers).  Put the following line in your core.ini (or
uncomment it if already there).

clock_adj_delay = 8
