GPL and GSB Hosting Question

by Chris Cavi » Tue, 23 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I'm about to convince myself to start DSL service at
my home.  This service would provide me with a
dynamic IP address which, according to SWBell, would
roll over about every three to five hours.  Here's
my questions:

When hosting a race on GSB, how does GSB look up my
IP address?  Is it only every time I host?  Is it set
in the options?  Is it even POSSIBLE to host on GSB
if I have a dynamic IP?  Can I JOIN a race if I have
a dynamic IP?

If GSB looks up my IP every time I hose and all I have
to worry about is my IP rolling after I've hosted, I
can deal with that.  Wouldn't happen probably more than
once an evening.  If it would cause significant problems,
however, I may reconsider.  If I can't join any races
due to a dynamic IP, I won't even consider the DSL service.

Thanks,

-Chris-

Hi Chris,

You can host and join with a dynamic ip, no problem. Everyone on dialup or
isdn does it. Depending on how your DSL in implemented, you may have to use
alternate_ip_addr_lookup = 1 under [communications] in your gpl's core.ini
file.

GSB and GPL can determine your ip from system parameters, and in case you
host, VROC knows your ip from the packets the GPL host sends.
