Nascar 4 any good?

by dman » Mon, 15 Jan 2001 23:28:44

Just wondering if the monster download for Nascar 4 demo is worth it? I just
have a modem now, but should be getting cable by the end of the month, so
that monster download would stink.. if the game stinks. :-)

Just wondering if it is truly using the GPL physics engine, too... is it
more realistic to drive than N3?

Anyone know?

:-)

"Realistic" tends to be somewhat subjective around here. :)
It is certainly *harder* to drive than N3 since the car does not feel as
well planted as N3's version. The learning curve is not quite as steep as
GPL's but like GPL N4 will require lots of practise to get really good at it
. The N4 demo has no AI cars to race against so unless you go online all you
can do is hotlap the 2 tracks included and fiddle with setups . If going
online get the Internet race Finder utility  at
http://www.InternetRaceFinder.com. Online racing is the usual mixed bag you
get at any publicly accessable racing venue; lots of good people but a few
real idiots as well.

Nascar 4 any good?

took me 15 hours to download on my 33k modem, i play online on my p200 with
32meg ram and a voodoo3 3000 card.  I get around 10-15 fps, its playable and
i regularly post pole positions in qualifying and win races.

it takes a while to realise that if it goes past 15degrees in a slide its
long gone.

its a great sim, the incar view is accurate as hell (see my post below on
ASA and ASCAR cars).  My only annoyance is the old N3 guys who run some of
the servers and put max ping limits of 200 on them.  the net code in N4 can
support well up to 400.  Its dropped packets that cause warp, ping aint all
that important as long as the server recieves a steady stream of packets.

Yup, its definitely worth the dl but only if you plan on racing online with it.
Single player part of the demo is boring as heck but the multi experience is
amazing.

The demo is limited, but fun to drive.  The game promises to be
excellent based on the technology apparent in the demo.

If you are getting a cable modem, wait until the end of the month to
d/l it.  Why?  Because after you have the cable modem, you will kick
youself for having wasted all that time  d/l it with a modem.

I got a cable modem a few months ago and the difference is nothing
short of astounding.  You know that already, but in practice, the
speed differential will blow you away.  You'll start looking around
for things to download just for the heck of it.

It's definately worth the download if you like Nascar. Start the download &
go to bed, your ISP will disconnect you for inactivity when it's finished
or use "Getright" or something similar, you can tell it to disconnect when
it's downloaded.

N3 is like driving a slot car in comparison. With N4 online you'll be a
newbie like most others, lots of spinouts going on :)
The bonus is when you get the final version, you'll have the feel for it.
It's very much like GPL in as much as it takes skill to be competitive and
the file structure is very similar to GPL and if you're into GPL then you
know how many add-ons and upgrades are out there for it. I'm sure the same
will be true for N4... I can't wait!!
DO IT... you won't regret it :))
Oh, the car painting will be awesome, the files are saved in 16 million
colors not a crappy 256... just freakin awesome!!
