Nascar Racing 2 good enough?

by rbat.. » Wed, 19 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Here's the deal - I've never been a PC gamer, so I don't really know
what's good, what's better, etc...

I was wondering, since the difference is about 25 bucks, is Nascar 2 good
enough for a PC racing newbie - or is Nascar 3 a must?  Keep in mind - I
don't know how great Nascar 3 is, heck - I don't even know how good Nascar
2 is - although I've seen that it got great reviews from almost everyone
when it came out.

I don't mind older stats and paint jobs - and I'd mind even less saving
about 25 bucks.   :)

Your best bet is to buy the Nascar Acceleration pack that was just
released. It includes Nascar 3, The Craftsman Truck Expansion Pack,
and Nascar Legends. All for the price of $50.
I wouldnt buy Nascar 2, because if you get into the game, chances are
you will end up going out and buying Nascar 3 anyway, and thats what
everyone is using now.

Nascar Racing 2 good enough?

Do you have a 3D card (other than ATI?).  Then buy N3.  Otherwise, pick up
N2 and play around with it.  I run N2 on my notebook, and have played N3 on
a friend's desktop.  The actual driving differences are sublte to the point
of being a non-issue, but the visuals in N3 are much nicer.

The driving differences a lot more than subtle if you have a FFB controller.
Get the package if you can--the rest of us would buy it if we hadn't already
paid full price for the separate products!!

Marc.

There are a few criteria to look at:
    1) Do you have a 3Dfx video card? If so, it's N3, hands down.
    2) Do you want to race over the internet for free? If so, it's N3, hands
down.
    3) Do you just want to race in a good sim with good looking cars that's
still extendable (trucks, sports cars, etc.) and SUPER cheap? If so, it's
N2, hands down (though I'd HIGHLY recommend NR99).
    4) Do you want to race against 43 drivers instead of 39? If so, N3 is
the ONLY way.
    5) Do you ONLY want to race against the computer? If so, any of them'll
do.

If you think you want to join a racing league (HIGHLY recommended!!!!),
N3 is the BEST way to go since so few support N2 (though many support the
trucks of NR99).

Be aware there are 4 versions to consider:
    1) N2 (duh...) - should be around $10US new, $5 used
    2) Nascar 50th Anniversary Edition (has the Busch cars add-on + bonus
tracks) - ~ $15US new, $10 used.
    3) Nascar Racing 1999 Edition (has the Busch cars, tracks AND trucks!) -
~$15US new, $10 used.
    4) N3 - ~$30US new, $20 used
    5) N3 Acceleration Pack (has N3, truck add-on, AND Nascar Legends!)
~$40US new. If affordable, THIS is the one I MOST HIGHLY recommend!!!!

You should be able to find any of these (except the Acceleration Pack)
at www.ugtz.com where you trade for FREE and get rid of some of your
unplayed games.

Doh.  I've got an All-in-Wonder 8meg pci card...   and I've noticed that
Rage Pro isn't exactly the happening scene of 3d accelleration standards.

I am planning on getting some sort of 3dfx thing eventually though.  Looks
like it might be Nascar 2 for me, at least for a while.

Thanks, all, for the good followups...  that really helped.  Helped me
realize that I probably will want to get a 3dfx card faster than I had
planned.   <G>  All-in-Wonder my ass...    damn Ati cards.    :)

With the various 3rd party add-ons available, Nascar99 is just fine.
I'm using it myself.
