GPL 3rd track???

id recommend silverstone for the next one.  Spa is actually an easy track,
just a big long straight away.  Just have to learn where to slow down which
is only a few places.  I would go on to silverstone and then maybe kyalami,
then spa.

Got GPL Saturday (my b-day), and I had been playing the demo for months,
so I was already very familiar with Watkins Glen.  I feel relatively
proficient at Monza after a dozen hours or so of track time.  I was
wondering which track would be best for me next??  I took a few slow
laps around each of the other courses (save for Spa and the Ring), and
all of them looked pretty mean.  Any sugestions would be greatly
appreciated.

Maybe Silverstone?  After Monza, it slammed home the concept of
finesse on the accelerator, for me.

No matter which you do next, your assessment was accurate.  They are
all pretty mean. ;)

Good Luck!

When i try out a new car (lately the Ferrari and im loving it) to set em up i
go Monza to Silverstone.  Reason being they are almost exactly the same type of
track... accelerate-brake-accelerate-brake.  Granted Silverstone is a little
trickier because the turn are a little sharper.  Then i would say Spa (cause
its realitvely easy to learn), Kyalami (kind of cross between Monza and
Silverstone), Zandvoort (short Spa)  then Watkins (realitively easy as well).
From there your fine for almost anything on any track.  Except the 'Ring.
Thats just a monster that takes a long time to tame.

My vote goes to Spa. Why? It's sure boring as hell, but I love that Ferrari
howl, and at Spa with it's long straightaways I can dig that music for
extended periods of time. Call me crazy...    :-)

After my initiation at Watkins and a few brief scraps at monza, I moved
on to rouen as a good place to spend learning to drive the cars. Rouen
might take a bit longer to learn the track (i.e. where the bends are),
but it offers a good variety of turns, camber and elevation changes to
hone your skills against. I've made significant (for me) strides into
the cars here, going from 2:08's (first consistent laps were in the
2:10's) down to 2:02s.

Silverstone is easy to learn, although it is a little dull because of
the sameness of the turns (3rd gear left kink followed by a 2nd gear 90
degree right hander). Kyalami is also an easy track to learn and offers
more variety.  Spa is great fun - some LONG straights with lots of
different types of turns and changes in elevation.  Zandvoort is very
fun, but a little different than most circuits.  The technique for much
of it requires slight lifts followed by sliding around the corners in
4th gear.  Rouen is a wonderful circuit that also contains quite a bit
of variety.  Mosport is also one of my favorites.  It has some very
dramatic changes in elevation, during turns, which takes some practice.

Any of the above would be fine for your next step.  If you're interested
in online racing, Zandvoort and Spa (along with Monza) seem to host
quite a few races.

The tough ones are Nurburgring (its sheer length alone makes it
extremely difficult to learn) and Monaco (this is the hardest track for
me - it's a *** keeping it on the track here).  Mexico is also tricky
- some very deceptive turns with cement filled tires buried near the
apex to really penalize you if you make a mistake.

Hope this helps,

Dave Ewing

Funnily enough it was learning Mexico when I first really got the hang
of GPL. On about my 20th lap I worked out how to slide through the
twisty section, using the camber and gears to control the slides. For
some reason it is the track I first got a sense of rhythm with: and
when I find that rhythm, boy is GPL fun!

Actually, the first time out three weeks ago, I took my Ferrari onto the Ring.
I'm now down to 8:54 and as for 'consistancy' I normally stay under 8:59 (not
online though, to much adrenaline?:))
Since going online I also started racing Watkins (1:07) and Zandvoort (1:25),
but actually only because of the little number of online Nurburgs.
Which by the way will change in a couple of weeks, I'm gonna be on cable :):):).

Then you're a better man than me, Alan.  You're absolutely right,
though.  Rhythm is the key to Mexico, particularly that last sequence of
back and forth left and right handers. I used to love this track in the
the original GP1/World Circuits, but have yet to really feel comfortable
on it in GPL.  A really good setup here is crucial - you must get the
suspension/rebound stuff tuned just right to handle the rapid changes in
direction.  Unfortunately, setups aren't my forte.

Hi Dave..

Well, I can usually set up a car decently if not perfectly and Mexico
has me BAFFLED. If I enjoyed driving there, maybe it would be easier,
but I just can't stand those damn tires.

I dislike the place immensely... now if I start lapping under 1:46, I
might change my tune....
