GPL Replay Analyzer Question

by bertr » Fri, 08 Nov 2002 11:16:42

In the GPL Replay Analyzer - Gearshift Analyzer section, it indicates
how many of your shifts were "speed shifts".   I hope this isn't too
silly a question, but exactly what is a "speed shift", and is it
desirable?

The reason I ask is that when comparing my PB vs a lap that I
downloaded, my "ratings" indicated that I'm "smoother" than the
downloaded lap, but not as "aggressive".  My lap had 0 speed shifts
while the downloaded lap had a total of 6.  (The downloaded lap was
faster by approx 1.6 seconds.  This was at Monza in an F2 Eagle.)

I always read that it's best to concentrate on being smooth in
controlling the car, but apparently smooth ain't everything!  8-)

Thanks!
Bert

Speed shifting is not lifting off the gas to change up gears, ok for
practice and hotlapping and can be faster but not good for int or pro races
as you will eventually blow the motor.

Your "Speed-shift" question was answered by Sid, and I don't think you
should read too much out of the Ratings-report in GPLRA.

It is experimental, and due to shortcomings in the data, algo and
maybe also GPLs physics it will probably never be much better.

We added it to see what feedback we got, and there haven't been much
about this.

Cheers,

/Martin
