Redline Racer demo ROCKS!!!

Looks like Ubisoft will have a hit, this game ROCKS! Go download it
now! (It's at www.avault.com - it' only 9 megs.)

Graphics: maybe a little better than Moto Racer (on my P200/3dfx) with
a rock solid frame-rate. Very pretty and smooth. I can make the
frame-rate a LITTLE slow by turning all graphics options up to the
MAX, but that's fine, since at the default settings it is very fast
and looks great (almost no popup). People with faster systems will be
able to make it look a bit nicer.

Gameplay and bike physics: very very good. At first the control (with
a joystick) seemed a LITTLE sensitive, almost twitchy, but I quickly
got used to it and was snaking through those turns. The physics model
is considerably more realistic than Moto Racer, you can't just go all
out on the throttle for the whole race (although the demo track IS a
fast one).  The bikes can turn on a dime, and can and do catch air
(both on bumps on the road, or by hitting bumps on the shoulder).

The controls, BTW, are initially set up for keyboard but are very easy
and intuitive to customize for a joystick.

The accidents and wipeouts are spectacular, and again seem a bit more
realistic than in MR. I've seen the mike do some wild stuff when I
"pushed" it too far, which is just how it should be (i.e., how it is
in reality on a motorcycle). Unlike many racers, you REALLY have to
respect the other racers - you can't bump n' run, you will wipe out
(again realistic, and a nice touch). Just as impressive, the AI racers
know this and THEY respect you, slowing to avoid ramming you from
behind.

My only minor complaint is that the whole track is constrained by
walls like Moto Racer, I hope they have some tracks more "opened up".
But overall a great effort by Ubisoft, I will buy it the minute it is
available (but I hope we in North America don't have to wait 4 months
as with the Ubisoft F1 RS release!).

P.S. - The "bumper cam" view (F2) is very intense!

Nice short review Joe.  I'm already very anxious to give it a go!  30 more
minutes of DL time...

I still prefer MR over Redline.  MR's sound is better (more powerful
sounding) and the sense of speed is better somehow.  Plus in MR's view
behind the windscreen (F6) I LOVE the way the screen shakes when you really
get on the throttle.  Redline is worth seeing, but I don't think it's got
enough balls to beat MotoRacer.

The accidents are cool and yes the graphics look great, but gameplay wise...
no thanks.

Redline Racer has absolutley wrong and horrible physics (crashes are fun to
watch tho). when u swap directions (say from leaning over right to going
left) the bike turns left for a moment even when the bike is leaning over
right. It it totally arcarde physics and nowhere realistic in any sence....
having raced bikes for 11years i figured this out.

I've got a PII 233 (and a Monster3D), I turned all the graphic settings to
max,
and this is by far the best looking game I have seen. It seems a little too
fast.
This is a must down load for
any one with a PII or K6, and a Monster3D. I would also like to add, if they
can do
graphics this good on a voodoo 1 card, I can't wait to see what they'll do
with the
voodoo 2 cards.

Hi,
Where did you find the RedLine Demo?

Ditto, I DLed it and was totally disappointed. I tried both the D3D and the
3dfx mode. Yes fps is fast but yuk on the rest. So far Motoracer is quite a
bit better.

I agree the RR sound is kind of lame. But it does have a better
physics model, which makes a difference to gameplay. MR was an Ok game
(great graphically and speedwise) but I got bored with it after a
couple weeks.

The Redline Racer physics model is laughable... contact another bike and
you spin around 180 degrees, heading the wrong way down the track at
high speed? Right. And driving up the side of mountains jumping a
superbike OVER the checkpoints doesn't fit in with my idea of a good
physics model either...

>I still prefer MR over Redline.

Same here. While Redline Racer looked much better and no pop-up
either, the controls felt too sluggish to my taste. MR had much
stricter and more instant controls IMO, which is better for this kind
of high speed game.

The problem is I got bored of Moto Racer after a couple of weeks of
playing it already. ;-) It just couldn't hold my interest for that
long, too repetitive. Damn them for not releasing 3Dfx SF Rush for
PCs, it was so much fun in the arcades with its jumps etc.

Same here. For me the only plus was the better graphics in RR.

For me, Motoracer was a huge disappointment as it appears to only have an
on/off lightswitch type throttle and brakes. Having ridden superbikes for a considerable
period of time, quick lap times are all about getting the braking points
right, feeding in as much brakes as the tyres will withstand then feathering
the throttle through the turn and finally feeding in as much power as the rear
tyre will withstand without breaking away through the exit of the turn and onto
full power down the straight.
Is there an analogue patch to make this game worth playing or have I just missed
something in the game setup?

Cheers

Mike

BTW Is the RR demo analogue?

>The Redline Racer physics model is laughable...

Then you must REALLY hate Moto Racer, which has even more simplistic
physics.

This is wierd, there must be a bug (I saw one other user who had the
same problem). The controls (on my Sidewinder) are FAR tighter and
more responsive in Redline than in MR.

100% agreement.

No, the game does work with an analog stick, but it's physics are
simple far more simplistic than what you are describing.
