GPL DUN problems

by Mike Dun » Fri, 30 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Everyone,

I have a small problem and trying to figure this out:

Mabey you can help me?? On Allison Hines web site is a great explanation of how to properly set up a DUN for GPL. I did that for GPL
and had
a regular connection for my ISP web surfing. Well god only knows what happen but Here whats happening now when I try to connect. I
was able to connect for a few weeks before also.
I go through all the settings that you have explained. I log onto the ISP and get this message:
The microsoft dial up adapter is not configured to work with the current network configuratiion. Please check your server type and
the network configuratioin in the controll pannel than try agian.
If i put the check back in error controll( as in applied ) it will connect. If i uncheck software compression and still have error
controll on, it will still connect. But i cannot connect with it off( error controll ).
I got a new modem Hayes 56k K56 flex accura, I used to have a 28.8 hayes Accura.  I have no clue why I cant take off error controll.
I also tried to take off error controll off in the modem configuration and received the same message. Iam lost. And now i noticed I
am getting kicked out alot more. I have gte.net as my ISP and have always had it, so its not them.  This sucks..I cant figure it
out?

Did this just start when you changed modems, or did it happen
sometime after you changed?

If it started when you changed modems, I'd say it sounds like
you have the wrong modem.ini file for the new modem.

If it happened sometime after changing modems, I'd say your ISP
might have reconfigured and has their modems set to reject any
call that isn't error-correcting. A lot of ISPs force error
control on to cover up ***quality dial-up lines they got from
the local telco.

You might call your ISP and see if there's an "alternate"
dial-up number for your area. A lot of times this will get you a
different modem bank or Portmaster, and you may see much
different connects on the new number. Some also have v.90 modems
on one bank, k56 on another, and USR X2s on a third. While you
could no doubt connect to any of them with a v.34 28.8, it may
not work with your k56 if you're dialing in on a X2 bank of
modems. You should be ok with v.90, as they are somewhat
"backwards" compatible.

 Hope this helps!

Doc,

<Did this just start when you changed modems, or did it happen

This started after I switched modems.

<If it started when you changed modems, I'd say it sounds like
you have the wrong modem.ini file for the new modem.>

I take it I should call Hayes and ask them? How do you edit the modem.ini file?

<You might call your ISP and see if there's an "alternate"
dial-up number for your area>

I have a alternate # in Rancho Cucamonga...and one in Ontario. The Rancho #
is a ISDN, 33.6K.  The Ontario # is a ISDN, 33.6K, and a K56 flex. I have tried connecting to both #'s. Same results with both. But
I will call them and see if they are forcing error controll?

I see you might know a little about networking. I have aproblem:

My computer and my neighbors and my other neighbor ( yes 3 house with 3 computers ) are all on a network with a hub. We have about
200 ft of RJ45 line running too all of are houses( LOL ). Anyway my problem is...everytime I turn the computer on ( mine ) it starts
up my DUN connection to my ISP. How do you quit this from doing this?
