Try removing TCP/IP from your "Network Neighborhood" properties, reboot,
re-add TCP/IP, reboot and then create a brand new DUN connectoid.

GPL crashing DUN - Can somebody help please?

Hi,

I would like to know if anyone has ever had this problem in GPL or knows
what is causing it.
The problem is that I am constantly losing my connection to the internet
shortly after taking to the track. I can watch an entire race from the
pitlane but as soon as I try to actually drive I strike problems.

I have GPL 1.2 / a 56k modem / PII 350mhz and a 12mb Voodoo2 card.
I have taken out all car and***pit updates but without success.
The problem occurs both when playing online against friends or on VROC,
or offline with the connection to my ISP running. Also in software mode
as well as 3dfx accelerated.

I have tried several 'Stay Alive' programs but I believe it is GPL itself
somehow crashing dial up networking. I often have to reboot to be able to
connect again.
The time it takes for the error to occur is totally random. On the same
circuit under controlled conditions I get it sometimes after thirty
seconds, sometimes not for a couple of laps.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have played GPL without having
this problem for well over a year and it's very frustrating not being
able to play right now.

Thanks guys. I know someone out there has the answer :-)

This happened to me when I tried out an external USB modem. Thirty seconds
into my first lap I would get kicked out of the race and lose my connection
to the net. I then went to a hardware based internal modem and all was fine.
Hope this helps shed some light.

But what sort of modem is it?  If it's a hardware/external modem then
please ignore this advice.  However, if it's a software modem then it's
going to need some CPU time in order to keep you connected.
Unfortunately GPL needs as much processor usage as it can get and will
be competing with a software modem for that usage.  If the software
modem cannot get access to the CPU when it needs it then it will drop
the connection.

Try doing a fresh install of GPL.  Maybe something is still corrupted
somehow...

It's just an LT Winmodem. I don't think it is the CPU. I play with
graphics settings that keep me at 36fps, and I only use 800x600
resolution for online play. Like I said in my post I have played gpl
without a problem since December 1998. I can't believe this is happening
to me now.

Thanks Eldred but still no joy I'm afraid. Is it possible it could be
something in the core.ini? I use Alison's version with my own Logitech
ffb settings.

WINMODEM?!?  You just said the magic word.<g>
If it worked before, and you haven't changed anything - maybe your connection
'path' has degraded.  Although the modem didn't need to struggle before, maybe
it has to work 'harder', and thus crashes GPL?  That's just TOTAL theory on my
part...
Sounds good, though :)

Just got a note from a fellow who was having crashing problems
suddenly and he reversed out the "no disconnect" patch.  Suddenly it's
not crashing anymore.  You may want to try this out if you've
installed that patch.

Eldred you are right on the money I believe. I didn't mention it in my
post but I am using a different telecomnications company to the one I was
on before. This company I am with now (Saturn here in New Zealand) put
new lines through our house and out to the street. Things didn't go wrong
right from the start however. I was playing gpl quite happily infact.
Then we had a crossed line fault when someone up the road also got
connected to Saturn. They fixed that but I guess my gpl disconnection
problem began soon after.

I will ring them (hey the phone still works!:) and ask if they can come
and test my line. I guess they must have a device to test line quality?

What if they say that's just how it is? I'll need to buy a new modem I
guess. Many of you would suggest I should be using a different modem for
gpl anyway am I correct? I always thought a modem was a modem was a
modem... which one would I need to get?

Hux,

PS Thanks Eldred, maybe now I don't have to retire from gpl afterall :-p

Cool - glad I could help.  I would guess anything that ISN'T a winmodem would
work fine.  I'm using a Boca external(ran out of slots), but I'm sure someone
here could give you a better suggestion...
