If I was building one today, I'd go for the fastest Athlon available, 256mb
(I have the extra 256mb for Lightwave), SB Live, and either a GF2Ultra or a
V5500. I have a PCI 5500, but I can't get the system to boot with it
installed (either with or without my current GF2 in the AGP slot). I've
heard that it scales nicely with CPU performance, and I've heard many raves
about the FSAA implementation with GPL, but I haven't been able to see it
for myself.

Runs well constant 36fps except for a start from back of the grid. This
ususally picks up well before turn one.
Detail is set at only about 25% and a number of details are switched off.
I had to reduce display resolution to 1024 x 768 for online play (league
race) which was annoying.
I occasionally hear my hard drive at work during a race. This causes some
stuttering. I think RAM ???
Overall my system works quite well. No discos, and a nice picture.
I will certainly go for a bit more power, when I can. But I'm really
enjoying GPL now.

So with a 1.1Ghz, GF2 and 512 RAM, what would happen with 100% detail
on? Poor frame rate? After the start of a race, I mean. What would
you need to run 100% detail at 36fps then?

video card, SB Live Value! and a MS FF Wheel. I have every graphic and sound
option cranked to maximum inside GPL, and run at 1280 x1024 with the latest
drivers and D3D patch. I generally get a constant 36 fps except the start of
a race (lowest I think I have seen is about 26). Once away from the start,
everything is fine.
Note that this is with FSAA off! Turning this on drops framerate to under
20!
I am not sure that the effort required to get 36 FPS for the start of the
race is worthwhile, seeing as it is still driveable at that point and the
drop does not last very long...
