Thanks for the input guys, but I think I should have been more
specific...I had no idea that there were $225 steering wheels (that is
where TSW2 starts). What is the best wheel for a newbie who wants to
spend no more than $100?

Thanks

Get your self a Microsoft Sidewinder precision Racing wheel.  there are 2
models, one with Force Feedback and one without.  Check out Ebay, I got me a
spare NON-FF version on there for $25 not too long ago.  Our local Sam's
club had the ff version for $99 before xmas.  the wheels are dependable, and
durable but they do not have the "Stick Shifter " like thrustmasters or
others. Some people don't like the pedals, but I race barefooted (or slipper
footed) and I don't have to nail the pedals to the floor to keep them in one
place like I did the Thrustmaster pedals.  4 guys in my shop all race,
everyone argues about what is the best trait of the 3 different wheel
brands..  It all boils down to quirky reasons some like Chevy's and some
like Hondas, Fords or Hemi's... I used to tell everyone that thrustmaster
was good enough, that was until I tried the MS wheel (for a month), then
went back to Thrustmaster Pro Digital...  I gave my thrustmaster Pro Digital
to my kids right away and rounded me up 2 sidewinders.

PS since then I have sold the Pro Digital, but I have 2 older "NASCAR racing
wheels" one is a worn out *** used as spare parts the other is just past
broken in plus I still won the t2 in a box in the garage.  I really need to
toss em.

the next choice would be a thrustmaster pro-digital probably because of
price limitations.  They are at least acceptable if you can get them
installed correctly...

Remember, bargain wheels can bite you if you have to end up buying them
every so often, Like I did the Thrustmasters...  if I had the 500 or so I
spent total on 4 thrustmasters over the years, I could have almost bought an
ECCI wheel back then...

Make sure whatever you get is USB.  Avoid any and all GamePort versions like
the plague!

GamePort versions have real problems under Win2K/XP.

Personally, I think the best _overall_ kit is the MSFFW.  IMHO, it has the
most comfortable pedals going, and the wheel is extremely durable.  Pot
problems are highly unlikely as they are optical.  Once worn in, the gear
driven wheel is smooth and quiet.

I've got two, with the oldest being 2 years old, and neither has given a
hint of a problem.

The only down-side to the MSFFW is the SideWinder software.  Microsoft's
support of the SideWinder is the worst in the industry.  It hasn't been
updated in like 2 years.

It WILL (version 4.0) install under Win2K and XP, but it will gripe that it
may not be compatible.  Install it anyway as it has been ok.

The Momo has a slightly better wheel, but the pedals are, alas, pathetic.  I
don't understand why Logitech can't get the pedals right after THREE tries.
I really love my Momo wheel, but I have the kit for sale for $140 (was $200
New) as my size 12 feet just can't deal with the pedals :(

I am going to be running WinXP...at least for a little while.

OK, so from what the feedback Stingre provided, I am planning on
purchasing the MS Sidewinder FF tonite as well as NASCAR 4. My PC came
last night and I cant wait to start racing.

Thanks for the posts and suggestions.

See you on Papy soon!

Which most will eventually do.  Why buy hardware that is known to be
problematic with the latest OS.

Why buy an OS if it supports less hardware than the one you're using now?

Act Labs force feedback RS and the performance pedals is ultimate for nearly
every race sim. I have gone through a few and for the serious racer this is
the wheel. N4,GPL,F12001,GP3 all are excellent. Don't forget the ATI Radeon
8500. Nearly double the frame rate in these games over voodoo3

That's a reasonalble choice.

There may be a few things to gripe about, but the MSFFW is extremely
durable, and the pedals are about the best there are, especially if you have
big feets :)

For $100, I think it's a best-buy.
