PS2 Racing Sims Versus PC

by Rick Sweene » Tue, 15 Oct 2002 06:26:36

I just purchased a PS2 and have it hooked up to a Sony 57 HDTV. I have been
racing on the PC for years. Anyone have any comments on the PS2 Formula 2
and
NASCAR racing sims?  Do they compare at all to the PC sims? Also how is the
racing
wheel for the PS2?  Would be a gas to run the PS2 sims on this TV, but Leary
of the quality
versus the PC sims.  Simulation, Graphics, and then sound would be my
priorities.

Thank you
Rick

Rick -

My boys had to have a PS2 so I got em one.  I also bought the Logitech Driving
Force wheel since my frakenstien Momo won't work with TSW pedals on the PS2.
I've tried most of the racing titles and I have to say, they don't touch the PC
versions.  Nascar Heat, WRC, GT3, and the new NFS:HP2 are all fun - but not like
similar titles on the PC.  The wheel is good, but force feedback is nowhere near
GPL, NR2002 or even Rally Trophy for that matter.  More like vibrations than
force feedback.

I am however, waiting anxiously for the new iteration of Tomb Raider.  I played
TR2 on my PC all the way through, but I think I'll dedicate this one to the PS2
just for simplicty.  It's awful easy to grab the dual shock controller and fire
up the console.  I would give my left nut to have your 57" HDTV - well maybe not
;)

forth these words of wisdom:

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit is getting rave reviews.  It's in my top force of
all-time.  Other great games are Gran Turismo 3, Ferrari F355 Challenge.  All
three support force feedback with the Logitech wheel.  F1 2002 is pretty good,
but can't compare to the PC version.

Have you tried the Formula Racing II on the PS2?

Rick,

I just got through writing a story for Motor Trend (Feb. issue) on console
racing games.  The Xbox's biggest advantage: 720p and 1020i HDTV support
(not to mention Dolby 5.1).  The PS2 trumps with Gran Turismo 3, a fabulous
game...and it supports both a wide variety of FF wheels (incl. PC wheels
from Logi & TM) *and* 720p.  Unfortunately, you need to have the
hard-to-find "component" TV connector cable (5-wire: 3 vid, 2 aud).  It's
actually easier to find the $60 Monster Cable version than Sony's own $30
cable.

As to the s/w, I liked EA's NASCAR Thunder, but if you're into realism,
World of Outlaws: Sprint Cars' physics model is a *lot* closer to the real
thing.

I didn't know Sony made HDTV sets as early as 57.

Yea, I am using the Monstor Component cable. I had a harder time finding a
component switch box, but finally found one. I have been playing Final
Fantasy and it really looks good, as well as Maddon 2003. Is the PS2 running
1080i?  I do not think the Sony supports 720p. I went back to the future to
find the Sony 57.

Well if you bought a PS2 for such priorities, then they are all mixed up.
There's no console racing game that even approach the level of complexity
and options (including often multiplayer services with 30+ drivers) of the
half-dozen most complex PC racing simulations.

Still, there are many quality sim-arcade games for the PS2.  Gran Turismo is
gorgeous to see, but it lacks any kind of complexity of let's say, GPL or
NR2002 or F1-2002 on the PC.

It's my understanding (Sony p.r. seemed *really* vague abt. this) that the
PS2 supports 720p but not "true" HDTV, i.e., 1020i.

GT3 also has something no Papy game has ever had: gameplay.

Fair point Steve.  It could be debated as a deliberate choice depending on
the type of motorsport.  I'll say compared to your typical racing game,
Papyrus has incredible customisation (which always equals to gameplay).  You
can set yourself a race at any track of the WC, at any length, with AI of
various style, with dozens of options with two sets of physics and you can
even race online with even more gameplay types.  Of course you all know that
;)

I'll say it's just, hmm "different gameplay".  Of course, that gameplay of
GT3 is immensely larger but it's still not much.  Once you raced those slow
cars without modifications at simple tracks, will you really want to come
back?

Uh.  Steve was a GPL beta tester *and* wrote the manual (the thick
one, not the skimpy one describing menus and such).  If there's any
bias there, I'd expect it to lie with Kaemmer's sims.

As far as being stupid, I dunno about that.  4 Wheel Drift is still my
#1 toilet reading choice, rivaled only by the newer Bill James books.

I've always felt that console racing titles aren't a snip of their PC
counterparts. They're always had a more 'arcade' feel. The most
realistic PS2 sim I've played is F1 2002 an while it can certainly
hold it's own, it suffers from canned spins, terrible AI and the
feeling that it's perfectly fine to throw your car across the gravel
trap and out the other side if it will get you a couple of extra
positions.

Your welcome!

The PS2 supports 720p since it can give VGA out. But if the games does it..
hm.. not sure.. im pretty sure Tekken4 does it anyway.
But a question, what does it do if your TV supports it, when many PS2 games
outputs 640*228 resolution, or 640*480?
It cant give 1020 resolution out in any game that ive seen.
