GPL AI racers

Two questions:

Are the AI racers in GPL worth emulating? I just ran a novice race at Monza,
and afterward I reviewed the in***pit of the other drivers. Either I was
shifting at all the wrong places, or the AI is faking it, or maybe all the
drivers really did drive so totally differently. Even different drivers in
the same cars would sometimes wind it way out (Chris Amon almost never hit
5th)  or shift quick (Bandini and Parkes both using lots of upper gear). It
also seemed as though the AI drivers were braking impossibly deep in the
turns.

Also, does GPL model tire wear at all? I thought I read that it didn't, but
I swear that after one off road excursion (and not using shift-R) that the
car is a lot more susceptible to slipping. As if I've flat-spotted a tire or
something.<g>

I've noticed that after a spin or two, it gets a lot easier to spin
again.  Seems like the tires get hot and lose their grip.

They don't use the same physics model as you do. So it isn't really a good
thing to try and emulate their driving style.

It doesn't model tire wear, but it does model tire heat.

Maybe you just damaged the car (suspension,...)?

Once I had a minor accident during a monza-11-lapper,
and afterwards I noticed that my lap times went up by
1 sec. from this point on (didnt feel anything unsusual during driving).
GPL Replay Analyser showed a suspension problem in the tech review
of the replay..

That's possible, but it's happened a few times when I didn't hit
anything.  Sliding off the track then back on it might hurt the
suspension, though.

>>Two questions:

>>Are the AI racers in GPL worth emulating?

They use a simplified version of the physics, so I'd say, no.

Tire wear is not modeled, since it was nearly not present with the
tires those days (too hard). However, tire *temperature* IS modeled,
and makes up for a great deal of slippery. Usually, best times will
only be possible after a lap or 3 on an averaged-sized track (say,
Monza).

Straight out of the pits with cold tires will give you fits, too,
until they get a little warm.

Herbert,

In any of the damage modes (except none) you can damage the
suspension...often more easily by sticking the car in the bushes than by
slamming into the wall!  This usually manifests itself by a pull to one side
or the the other, as if you'd bent a tie-rod.

Yeah, but I was using no damage. (ok, i'm  a dweeb)
