How can I improve my times on GPL?

by Scott Boha » Sun, 29 Aug 1999 04:00:00

I have been playing GPL on and off for about 5 months now and
I can't seem to improve my lap times any more.  I have been
concentrating on 3 circuits, here are my PBs. (using an Eagle)

Monza: 1:30.96
Watkins Glen: 1:07.69
Silverstone: 1:32.19

I haven't started fiddling about with the car settings, I've only lowered
the fuel to 9 laps or so.  I am reluctant to do so because I can't tell
if the setting I've changed has improved the car or not!

Have I got some way to go with my lap times before I start changing
the settings, or have I got to spend hours testing different setups now?

PS Has anyone else noticed that you can't get a frame rate higher than
about 36fps??

Hi, Scott --

You don't mention whether you're driving the 1.0 version or if you've
patched it.  If you don't have the patch installed, do it now.  Despite some
of the patch's inherent problems, the new default setups are much more
forgiving and easier to drive than the defaults in 1.0.

My experience using other people's setups downloaded off the net is that it
won't take hours of practice to determine if the set-up is right for your
style -- probably just half a dozen laps at any one track.  (I know someone
will disagree with that.)  For instance, when Alison Hine released her
set-ups for the Ferrari, I started breaking my personal best times that same
night.

Tell us what marque you prefer driving, and I'm sure you'll get all kinds of
suggestions of whose setups to try.

Regards,

Kurt

You can download the patch at http://www.papy.com/ (Papyrus home page)
or at the Fast-lane http://www.the-fastlane.com/ , they have nearly every
cool add-on for GPL also.
You'll notice that the GPL 1.1 setups are much more forgiving than the 1.0
ones. For other good setups check out:
Alison Hine' site: http://simracing.com/alison/gpl/ (especially her Ferrari
setup)
Ricardo Nunnini's Lotus setups: http://get.to/gpl/ click 'Driving Tips'

To your question about fps: GPL is limited to 36 fps, you should try to
always have 36 fps, since the control input is smoother.
If you want to improve your times, it's best not to fiddle too much around
with setups, they won't give you 2-3 secs. Try to find a car with a good
neutral setup, download the replays of the fast guys and analyze where you
lose time. A very good tool to do this is SpyGirl, which lets you merge two
replays into one (Yours and the fast one... :-). I think you can download it
at the FastLane.
Hope, that helps!

How can I improve my times on GPL?

Further to my original post, I thought it would be a good idea to put
a replay file of one of my laps on my website.

The lap is 251Kb and can be downloaded from

www.boham.freeserve.co.uk/Monza_B.rpy

Any comments on how I could improve, or what settings to change on
the car would be most appreciated.

PS. I think GPL is the best racing simulator ever.  It's just brilliant when
a friend is watching you do a 1:31 round Monza, then you ask them if
they want a go and they can't even get round the first corner.

I'm not the GPL expert (yet, I hope... my PB in Monza is 1:29.25 in the
Lotus and I can do high 1:29's quite consistently), but I'd something to say
about your replay.
First, hitting the armco exiting Ascari and then going through the grass is
not a good idea. (But I think you can imagine that yourself... :-)
Second, work on your exit of Parabolica. You are way too slow there. I
always measure my exit speed of parabolica by watching the replay in 'arcade
view' and looking at the speed when I just go by the edge of the wall to the
left. I get 207-208 kph there (the champs get over 210...), you are about 10
kph slower. This lack of exit speed haunts you all along the looong front
straight. I enter the parabolica a little bit faster than you, then let it
go wide, turn the car by going off the throttle and go into third gear very
early. Then I can almost go flat out of the corner.
Third, I don't know, which setup you drive with, but your top speed seems
too low. Even if your exit of Parabolica is not the best, you should be
faster before braking for Curva Grande. I get 311 kph there, if I mess up
Parabolica I get about 309 kph. You get 306 kph with the Eagle, which
generally has a slightly higher top speed than the Lotus. Don't know, gears
set too long, too much fuel, calibration of your wheel (gas pedal - maybe
you can't reach full thottle) not OK? That also becomes obvious when braking
for Lesmo1: You get about the same exit speed out of Curva Grande as I get,
but before Lesmo1 you are about 5-6 kph slower.
The Lesmos are very good, from my point of view. If I'd get the Lesmos so
good and do the Parabolica as I've done in my best lap, I'd surely get a
1:28.

Your times are almost exactly the same as my best after 6months or so. I
just can't seem to go quicker.
Alison's Ferrari set up for monza took me from 1.31.9 to 1.30.4 within a few
laps, but I've hit a brick wall again now.
I wish I had more replays to check out

Well let me just say this....there arent alot of people that can do 1:30s at
monza.  I can do it and alot of other GPLers on this NG can...but the real Jim
Clark only ran in the 1:29-30s there.

Now on to how to get faster...its not your setup (well...it COULD be but i
doubt it).  You are a little slow off Parabolica (to echo a previous post).  My
PB at Monza is a 1:30.61 so i could take the same advice your getting.  Where i
notice i lose ALOT of time is in the Lesmos.  You want to run about 75-80 MPH
thru the first and 80-85 thru the second to have a fast lap.

Hmm.  I just checked one of my replays.  I'm at 188kph out of the parabolica,
and about 304kph before Curva Grande.  I'm using AH's Ferarri setup.  I guess I
*still* have a long way to go... :-(

Thanks to everyone who has posted on this thread, your ideas
have been a real help.

I have started using the Lotus, which knocked over a second off
my best at Silverstone straight away (1:30.57 now, download the
replay from www.boham.freeserve.co.uk/SilverB.rpy , comments
welcome (yes, I know I went on the grass a bit)).

I am next going to start working on Monza again, try to get under
1:30 (!)

It's good to know that there's people out there willing to help.

I think it was probably my throttle pedal not going to 100%, I've had
some problems with that because, strangely enough, the pedal gives
100% reading when about 96% to the floor.  This means, when I
calibrate it, I am never able to get 100% throttle.  I have sorted it
though by putting a small bit of wood under the pedal so that it doesn't
quite go to floor.

I'll let you know how I get on at Monza.

I am beginning to wonder if it's patch-related: ever since I
installed the patch, I find it extremely hard to get close to
my old lap records from 1.0. For instance, I hardly ever get a
sub 1:30 at monza with 1.1 where my pb is a 1:29.5. the only
track I managed to improve upon is Zandy, and only by switching
to a Ferrari and abandoning the trusty toad.

Anyone else having the same problems?
