Interesting PCI bus / Verite DMA info

I found this in another newsgroup.  It might have interesting
implications for users of Verite cards...

This might explain why some people are getting sub-par DMA
performance with their Verite board (even if they have a good modern
motherboard).

Pick one or more: Model Rockets (competition-NERCB) / PCs (even Atari!) /
Papyrus ICR-ICR2-NCR / Who needs a life when you have multiple non-lives?

How do you determine if all your system components are 2.1 compliant ?

And the only PCI card I have in my board is the Reactor.  I have the HX
chipset and get minimal DMA performance.  Why, because I can't change
the PCI Latency via my BIOS.  As stated "why some people". . . but not
all.

: I may have run into something that could help with this...
: Below is something I read concerning BIOS settings that you can not see.

: I have never run this utility myself, so I can not endorse it.  I did have a
: Tyan board once that had NO PCI latecy timer adjustment in BIOS and I probably
: would have given it a try out of despiration.  I did use MRBIOS once on a Tyan
: board and adjusted the PCI timer and had NO success at all.  It is very
: possible that a design flaw exists.  Hope this helps.

The program you mentioned my work for AMI BIOS's.  I am not aware of
anything for the Award BIOS yet.  I tried playing with the ctchipz
program and could not get any more performance on my Award by playing
with the Award BIOS.  But I suspect there is something else that the
Award BIOS is doing that I can't reach via ctchipz.

Now for the good news for Tyan and other Award BIOS people.  Word has it
that Intergraph is to arrive later this week at Tyan with their video
cards.  They will be able to test their cards on all of Tyan's
motherboards and work with their techs to see if we can't get some more
performance out of our machines.  From what I've heard from Intergraph,
they are experiencing performance problems with certain versions of the
Award BIOS (4.51PG I think).

Now, for a little flame-bait target practice.  Notice, it's Intergraph,
not Creative Labs, not Sierra, not even Rendition that is going out of
their way to help us out.  Of course they expect to make more sales too.
But. . .   Sorry, I am usually a little more mature than to post such
"bait", but Intergraph has an excellent attitude towards customer
support and I just thought I would underscore that.

Easy... That means that "it's Intergraph, not Creative Labs, not
Sierra, not even Rendition" who made a card that sucks so badly in our
Tyans ;)))
Note: I don't have anything against Intergraph, I don't even have
their card. Actually I do have one gripe, afaik the Intense whatever
is still not available in Europe. I hope they'll get their act
together with the export restrictions before the new 3dfx-Hercules
VodooRush/SVGA (don't remember the actual name:) thingie hits the
stores.

[This season is sickening: waiting for a _real_ (fast, affordable,
available) 3-D card, for an 83 MHz m/board with at least 4 ISA slots,
for Melbourne '97 :]

Sincerely, Karim

Just for the record, Sierra has been working on this problem, too.  The
difference is that they post their info on one of those simulated BBS
things on their web site.  Since I have no knowledge about Creative Labs
or Rendition and whether or not they are working on this problem, I
won't embarrass myself by making claims about their support activities.
I will point out that since Rendition doesn't sell a card directly, it's
not unreasonable to believe that the vendors are the ones that will do
the support.

I have no connection with Sierra, except that I have a Screamin' 3D
card. Oh, and I gave my brother a Reactor 3D for Christmas.
