GPL questions

by Juic » Fri, 26 May 2000 04:00:00

I'm new to GPL, and would like to know how I can get it to run on my GeForce
card.  I have just recently built a new computer with a PIII 550 o'clocked
to 854.  I have 2 voodoo2's in sli, and a GeForce 3d prophet DDR card.  When
I start GPL, and go to options, the only video card options are 3dfx,
rendition, and none.

How can I get it to run on the GeForce?  And, is it worth the time and
effort trying? or does it run better on the voodoo2's.

thanks in advance!

get the open-gl-beta at www.papy.com and read the installation
instructions. set mirrors every 2nd frame and set the buffer flipping
mode in your driver settings for the geforce to "use block transfer".

It will probably run better on the v2's but if you want to try the
GeForce, get the opengl patch from www.papy.com.  Make sure you read
the readme that comes with it.  And your will want to set buff flip to
block transfer.  But it will probably run better on the v2's.

I don't have a Geforce so can't answer your second question, but I
believe you need to get the OpenGL patch to make GPL run on the
Geforce. Get it at the below url under the GPL utilities section.

Stay with the V2's, don't bother with OpenGL. I have about the same
configuration, bar the overclocking. I really like the V2's, on my
system GPL looks a lot better.

With OpenGL I can't make screen shots and the changing between screens
when starting GPL is MUCH slower.

I don't know if this is a configuration problem, but since GPL runs
great on the V2's I really couldn't care less.

Thanks for all the replies, I've tried it, and will stick to the voodoo2's,
they do look very nice!!
Another question:  For some reason this game only fills about 3/4 of the
screen, is this normal?
The setup screens are normal, but when you get into the game, there is black
on all four sides (about and inch and a half).  I'm using 1024 x 768, but
that doesn't seem to happen in any other games, either using the voodoo2's
or not!

thanks again in advance!

Yes, that is normal. I think they did it to maximize frame rate. But,
they should have made it an option.

Do you have vertical and horizontal monitor screeen size adjustments?
Use them to max your screen size while in the game and it should then
stay that way without affecting any thing else. Works with my
VeiwSonic 17PS anyway. --

Scurlock) thus spoke:

You mean the game isn't supposed to be that way? I've always thought
the letterbox look was deliberate in GPL.

The letter box format is normal, but it should extend fully to the left
and right edges of the monitor. I assumed that was not the case with
you.

Scurlock) thus spoke:

Yes, it was fully to the left and right, just top and bottom cut off.
Usually if your screen won't extend to full screen it is because the
monitor is not using the right refresh rate for the monitor's
resolution. That's my experience anyway.
