Difference between Cart and ICR2

by Anthony Brook » Sat, 29 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I know this has been asked before and I tried searching for the answer, but
what is the difference between the two. Does Cart have all the latest
patches already installed? I recently reloaded Cart and actually got it to
work in Windows with my TNT2 Ultra. It doesn't look as good as my old
rendition card but I've replaced it long time ago. I actually have a copy of
both CD's that's got all the versions on it, Dos, Windows, and Rendition. I
was just wondering what the differences was. Thanks.

The difference is minimal.........Supposedly CART has been patched up to 1.02
and it has a different pallete, so some tracks make not look right........
I dunno

A question for you -- how does the Windows version work with
contemporary hardware (i.e., something beyong a P150)?  I have also
parted with my Rendition card, and the DOS mode hassles are too much of
a pain, so I've since uninstalled everything, but if it would run well
in Windows mode on something like my AMD K6-2 350 with a fast 16 MB
Banshee card, then I'd love to reinstall it all over again.  FYI, I
realize that I'd have to settle for non-accelerated, non-3D SVGA
graphics, but I'm wondering if the faster CPU makes Windows mode more
playable (that is, more like it is in standard DOS mode).

Thanks in advance!

I'm running it on a PIII 600 with a TNT2 Ultra. It runs it pretty good. Of
course now, it's really showing its age. I have both versions, ICR2 and
Cart. With ICR2, I had a hard time setting up my controller. I couldn't
calibrate it, even after loading the patches.  I use a TSW2. But with Cart,
it loaded right up. I have alot of games like Nascar3/Legends, MGPR2, DTR,
GPL and Rally Championship to name a few, but I still find Cart to be a
challenge even after all these years.  I think it's worth the time to
re-install it and check it out.

I'll second that!  I'm still trying to break 1:11 at Laguna Seca.  If
anyone knows where good car setups still exist, please let me know.  As
far as I can find out, the many sites that used to have ICR2
information on lap records and the setups used, are gone.

I running on a PIII 500mhz with a Voodoo3 3000, and I get frame rates
in the 55-65 range (the Windows version, not DOS).  In that respect,
modern hardware helps the game a lot.  Admittedly, the graphics are
dated compared to GPL and newer games, and ICR2 still has an unfinished
feel (odd little hesitations and minor graphics glitches).  But since a
CART edition of GPL seems unlikely to ever happen, ICR2/CART still
fills a niche for me.

Difference between Cart and ICR2

Hi,

I allready have ICR2, but I recently got a rendition card (to play
Grand Prix Legend) and I was wondering if it is worth it to try to
track down a rendition version of ICR2.  Are the graphics any
different, or are they simply faster?

thanks,
-Dennis

The graphics are much cleaner and sharper AND faster.  But if you have
a 2nd gen Rendition card(hercules Thriller3d or Diamnond Stealth II
S220) then you will have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get the 3d
program to run properly.
Hey CART is usually sold for $12 ot less, so if you can find it, go
ahead...

It is really worth it.  The graphics are totally different for many of
the tracks, and you can download other tracks that have been modified.
For instance, Louden with the awesome clouds from Elkhart.  There is
just no comparison, really.  The rendition version is fantastic, but be
advised, there is A LOT of patching required to get it to run on the
newer Rendition cards.  Good luck!

On the other hand, I only patched the indycar.exe with one file and had no
problems running the rendition version wth a v2200 chip video card. I don't
feel that I had to go thru any hoops to make this work well...easily as simple
as running the rendition version that came with my v1000 video card.  And the
v220 card with 8mb ram always seemed to run faster frames per second in all
games including indycar.
