GPL error: Annoying textures

by Johan Foedere » Tue, 20 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi All,

I just upgraded my system and now GPL is giving me trouble. Both in the
menus and during races I get weird rectangles on my screen. It's usually
about 4 of them, which all are the same. The weirdest part is that the
rectangles are filled with a texture from the sim! But then only in two
colors, mostly black/yellow or black/green. It's not always the same one
one, but I recognised it as being textures when one time it was the body
of a car! It doesn't cause the system to crash or anything, but it's
really annoying to have flickering rectangles in your view while racing.

Note that I only upgraded my mainboard, CPU (PII), and memory (128Mb
DIMM). My video card (Matrox Mystique), 3d card (voodoo 1) and HD are
still the same. I don't seem to have any trouble with any other games
and even after I reinstalled GPL the problem persists.

Has anyone else had this problem? And does anyone have solution?

Thanks a lot,
Johan.

...is there anything left on your system after uninstalling the game? For
instance, a folder with game info... next check the registry for any entry
dealing with GPL, and promptly remove them. It may be also be a setting on
your card dealing with buffering. make sure that triple buffering is not
turned on.

Thanks I'll try that this evening when I get home. I think there was
indeed something left, because the default directory when installing was
the one I had it installed in before. In there was nothing left... how
could the computer that.

I don't think it is a setting on my card, since I didn't upgrade my card
I also didn't install any new drivers. But just in case... where can I
find this triple buffering option?

Thanks,
Johan

GPL error: Annoying textures

I remember a similar texture flashing glitch in Longbow2. there were
several solutions that people reported fixed the problem...

1. Some users reported that switching their soundcards from full duplex
to half duplex resolved the issue. This solution didn't fix it for my
system tho.

2. The fix that worked for me was to disable "USWC Write Combining" in
my BIOS. Once I did that, no more oddball textures.

I haven't run into this problem with GPL, but one of those solutions
might help you out... worth a try anyway.

Well, that didn't do it :-(. I uninstalled everything (including sierra
utilities), but after a fresh install the bitmaps are still there. Any more
ideas? please......

I had a similiar problem except that my textures were solid black, in
much the same 'pattern' as your problem. The solution for me was to
download the latest drivers for my Voodoo2 card (which included 'Glide'
drivers that weren't with the original drivers as installed from the
box).
