N2002: Qualifying for Dayton against AI

Ok, I am running races at 100%.  When qualifying for daytona, the
highest I can get is about 35th.  I tried several different setups
including a setup from team-lightspeed which are usually very fast.
In N4 I could always get top 10 and most often get the pole.  I always
throw away the first lap by running mid to high in the corners to try
and get my RPMs up and then drop to the bottom of the track for the
second lap, but I just cannot get my engine wound up.  I have tried
modifying the setups.  I have changed gear ratios, dropped springs
rates, etc. (no problems with handling, just trying to get the car out
of the air and get the engine wound up).  Anybody have any setups or
techniques that work?

Everyones having trouble with Q at 100% I think it must be something wrong
with the ai speeds.

There -is- something wrong with the Q-speeds, since the AI at Daytona
for example is (allmost) impossible to beat in the Q, yet during the
race they are much slower and easier to beat..

I don't think anything is wrong with the AI. You are an owner/driver when is
the last time you saw an owner/driver taking the pole at plate race? :)  I
think Brett Bodine is the last owner/driver left isn't he?

True.  I can usually cautiously draft to the front in about 20 laps,
but if the "big one" happens in the first 20 laps there is a greater
chance of getting caught up in it.

BTW, my winning strategy for the plate tracks is to stay up in front
until about 5 laps before green flag pit stops and then drift to the
back of the lead pack.  If you stay out in front during pit stops
there is no way to ensure you will have a drafting partner, if you pit
in the middle of the pack or in 2nd or 3rd place, you will get run
over by the AI entering pit road.

Since it seems to be a common problem qualifying at the plate tracks I
will just modify the ini file for the ai qual modifier and I won't
conside it cheating.

Change the relative qualifying variable (forget the exact name) in the
track.ini files for Daytona/Daytona Night to 0.97.  That puts my
fastest Q lap ever at Daytona in the top 5 most of the time and my
average Q lap somewhere around midfield.

I'm using 0.97 at Talladega as well but I haven't done much testing so
0.98 or the default 0.99 might be fine.
