Destruction Derby 2: SUCKS - Save your $$$ - I didn't

by Doug Bur » Sat, 30 Nov 1996 04:00:00

I can't believe how bad this game is - I'm just glad I didn't sell my
copy of DD1 yet --
I'm putting it back on the PC tonight.

What's wrong with it?  Heck - what's not wrong with it.

1.  How can you wreck the other cars if you can't catch them?
2.  The sound stinks - where did they get this?  Nintendo?
3.  Steering is terrible - and no support for wheel
4.  Crashed 3 times on me - game just hangs
5.  The cars handle terribly
6.  You can't use the arrow keys to steer
7.  You can't control the graphics
8.  No net play - give me a break.  What company would put out a racing
sim and not offer net play in 1996/97

Take my advice - save your $$$ - I wish I had ...

what a disappointment

Back to MTM and NFS !!  and DD1

I agree.. I am very dissapointed.. should've made it a DOS game to begin
with.. there's one other annoyance you didn't mention...

PAUL PAGE does all the commentary.. That would make me return it before
I ever run it!!

Shrug... my CD has a DOS version (even though it's not mentioned in
the manual).  Look in the \DOS dir on the CD!

The windows version was WAY choppy... the DOS version was better for
me.

I tried the DOS version - did you find the cars any easier to
hit/wreck?  I didn't ...

I picked it up last night and has similar issues.
The game requires ALOT of computing power.  I have
a P133 with Matrox millenium and 48MB of RAM.  Still too slow
in hi-res.  Motion is jerky and control is very difficult.
DD1 is much easier.  The only thing I see added is an annoying
menu that is very slow...but cool looking.
Flipping over is neat...but it gets annoying to be flipped over
after a while...especially by some lucky/unlucky hit.
his #1) They are unbelievabally fast cars...and brakes suck.
I'll try it some more...but I'd have to agree on the saving of $$$

Id have to agree. I bought it the day it came out and returned it
yesterday (HURRAY for electronic Boutique, a software store with a
return policy).. Under windows my car always turned left.. The
unfortunat part is with a little work this could be a great game. The
tracks and bowls are great.. I agree with all 8 points above.. In
addition Id like to add...

   9) Your car has 4 gears in reverse.. (Ok this isnt impossible but Ive
never seen such a transmition.
  10) No mention of the dos version anywehre.. But its there.
  11) Dos version doesnt suport cyrx processors.. (I have a work around
(that I came up with since there tech support was clueless) copy the
dos directory form the CD onto you HD.. edit the .cfg file.. (the
line says CPU or processor or somesuch.. from 5 to 4).
  12) The entire product has the look and feal that they RUSHED it out
the door at the last minute.
  13) To repair your car use the accel button.. not the return key.
  14) I have a problem with a divring game that handles better form the
keyboard than with my T2.

That is too bad. On the Playstation, it seemed like a lot of fun- at
least the 10 minutes I spent with it at Blockbuster Video. I prefer
actual sims, so I never intend to buy it.

Fact is, one of the Psygnosis chiefs said in an article  that their
first priority is still the Playstation; perhaps in the port to PC
they just don't know their way well enough. Given that most casual
gamers (the sort that would buy DD2) on PSX don't have wheel/pedals,
it makes sense that this game handles better by keyboard.

Their F1 sim, OTOH, definitely needs a wheel. It takes some getting
used to if you are used to GP2, but IMO, their F1 is a *fantastic*
sim, a masterpiece- i hope they get the port to PC right.
