Destruction Derby, Fatal Racing ?

by John Reime » Tue, 07 Nov 1995 04:00:00

I played Destruction Derby on a Playstation last Friday, well actually it was
two Playstations linked together, and the game is fun, but the steering is
awful. It is a complete mystery to me how Sony could design the Playstation
with just joypads or a clickclick joystick. There is no analog joystick
steering option which is awful for all racing games. I dont know whether the
PC version has an analog joystick option or not.

The game itself is a racing and/or destruction game with at least the
following features (maybe I forgot some):

Wreckin racing: Here you get points for hitting other cards so that they
turn: 90 degrees: 2 points, 180 degrees: 4 points, 360 degrees: 10 points,
destruction of other car: 10 points, every points doubeled if you do it to
the leading car. 10 points for winning, 6 points for being second and ?
points for being the third in a race. You can practice each race (on your
own as a time trial or with other cars) or make a championship with (I think)
6 courses. The last course is "the bowl", no track, just an arena, where
everyone drives around like crazy trying to wreck your car.

Stockcar racing: Just winning counts, the other cars are very fast in this
option, winning is difficult (the steering...)

Destruction Derby: No tracks, just the bowl. varied options especially for
two linked players (dont want to write them all down).

In championship there are five divisions of drivers, you start in 5th and get
one division higher each time you are first in your division at the end of
the season.

The game shows the damage of your car so if your front is nearly done, you
can drive backwards (at least in the bowl) to prevend more front damage.

There are replay options (I think there is a bug in setting the custom
helicopter camera, but the default setting is quite good) and different view
options during the race.
The idea is real fun, and so is playing, it would be great if you could use a
proper joystick.
This is my opinion, not a fact, some people seem to do great with a joypad, I
also tried Ridge Racer on the PS, same thing with steering. Once you played
it in an amu***t center, you will find it awful with a joypad. The graphics
seem to be equally good.

Greetings, John.
