NFS5: PU - I have it. Warez vs. Retail comparison

by rrevve » Fri, 24 Mar 2000 04:00:00

O.K., having just received my Retail copy of NFS: Porsche
Unleashed from the friendly FedEx guy, I made a comparison to
the WAREZ version I have been playing with for a couple of days.
Looking in only the main folder of NFS:PU, here are some of the
discrepancies I found. Note the file sizes:

WAREZ : PORSCHE  EXE  2,129,965  03-16-00 11:05p Porsche.exe
RETAIL: PORSCHE  EXE    249,119  03-13-00  2:52p Porsche.exe

In the RETAIL and don't exist *at all* in WAREZ:

CLCD32   DLL     27,648  03-13-00  2:52p clcd32.dll
CLCD16   DLL      6,784  03-13-00  2:52p clcd16.dll
00000409 016    107,318  03-13-00  2:52p 00000409.016
00000409 256    215,478  03-13-00  2:52p 00000409.256
PORSCHE  ICD  2,129,965  03-13-00  2:52p PORSCHE.ICD
CLOKSPL  EXE    177,152  03-13-00  2:52p clokspl.exe

etc., etc.

There are over 1600 files in the other sub-folders.
I suspect they contain other differences.

When I run the retail version, here is what I noticed
*immediately*. S-M-O-O-T-H-E-R. Before, with the WAREZ,
when I maxed it ALL out at 1024x768 I would get a little
choppiness, at times, on my PIII-600/Voodoo3.

Not any more.

The interior engine sound is much more clear and stronger in
the Retail version. In the WAREZ version it was weak and I had
to***around with volume controls in the game to make it
stronger than everything else. Then, when I would go to a
replay, in the external view is was way too loud.

Not now... :)

I am VERY happy with this thing and if you like Porsches
(who doesn't), then rush to your nearest Electronics
Boutique and hand the clerk $29.95.

You too will be a happy camper. Trust me on this.

Bye-bye, warez version, you have now been sent to
the pirate graveyard.

I find the driving modle to be guite good, exept from one huge miss
and that spoils the game for me:

No throttle steer at all!

When flooring it in a slide, there is absolutly no wheelspin or power to the
wheels
whatsoever....huge miss.

The car understeers nicely, but the throttle thing just makes it horrible.
Also of course, the cars are small like radio controlled cars compared
to the scenery. Very anoying...

FYI,  The difference between the size of the EXE files comme from the
Safedisk protection (it also uses the clokspl.exe and clcxxx.dll files)

Porsche.ICD = Porsche.exe  (safedisc reads the ICD file as an EXE)

I guess you realize that on a rear-engined Porsche that adding
throttle when in a loose or oversteer condition, in general will
lessen the oversteer? Also, if you lift off the throttle, you will
spin. Both of those things are modelled in this game.

I'm not sure what you're talking about.

See above.

Porsches, at least the older ones, don't understeer very much.

;)

I haven't a clue as to what you're talking about. I have seen no
scale problems whatsoever in NFS:PU.

Thomas, maybe you're confusing Porsche 2000 with Revolt?

I think he is talking about the fact that the roads look like they are 10
lanes wide and it looks like you could fit 2 cars in one lane.  I have
noticed that from the screenshots. I just hope that when I play it, it does
not bother me. (I do not think it will)

Do you know if this works in Win2000?   I have ordered it and am wondering
if I will need to install Win98 in a dual boot to play it.  I am prepared to
do that as I simply love this game, but I would really love it if it worked
in Win2K.

( lotta snippage of good info)>

Can you drive a 904 in this one? I've always wanted to since I read Henry N
Manney's account of the TargaFlorio races in early '60s edition of
RoadTrack. Theres just something *really* nice about the 904.

FWIW - If you look at the tracks in GPL, then look at photo's of the real
tracks (or even footage of a race), you'll notice that in GPL they seem
almost twice as wide.  One track that really proved this to me is Mosport.
I watched a Formula Ford (I think) race at Mosport and couldn't get over how
narrow the track looked compared to GPL.

Guess it just makes for better *** if you give the virtual driver a
little more room...

David, there are 356,356a,356b,550,911,914,928,944,930,935,944,
959,964,965,993,996,boxster,gt1

Also, there are several models of many of the above, like coupes,
cabrios, targas, speedsters, supers, carrera, etc.,etc.,etc... ;)

It doesn't have a 904, 917,906, or 908, but there is a *lot* of Porsche
goodness in this game.

Snetterton is darn tight :)

Rouen also.  The Ring is quite narrow.  Zandy is very realistic compared to
real-life track width.  But you are right about Mosport (and I'll add
Watkins Glen), the track is probably around 10% larger than reality in terms
of track width.  Like we care much.  At least they don't invert elevations
or invent corners to patch their tracks like F1 2000 (just try the A1-Ring
to see).

True, all true. I'm incredibly impressed to finally see this in a
