Greetings to all "Daytona" fans out there,
Here are my thoughts and hints....
I discovered this great game in my local video arcade about a
month ago....and since then have become an partial ***!! Depending on
the amount of time I have with university, I will usually spend about A$20
per week (the only game I have ever really spent money on!). The textured
graphics are simple awesome, and the sound matches perfectly! The first
time I played it with 2 friends, we pumped about A$70 between us into the
2 machines.
The steering response is the best I have known on a car simulator
(much better than Sega's last effort called Virtua Racer). I particuly love
the gear change; as it feels great throwing the stick through the gears
rather than simple pushing a lever either forwards or backwards.
The dynamics of the car is very realistic, because if you jump on
the brakes, the car's arse will lose traction. Likewise if you throw the
car down to many gears, it will compression lockup again causing the car
to lose control. The idea then (just like normal driving) is to go easy on
the brakes/accelerator and only change gear when really necessary!
Last week I went into Melbourne (Australia) and played it....there
they had 8 hooked up together, which made the game totally wild (a bit like
deathmatch with 4 players on Doom; simple hectic)! What I like best is when
the your car gets damaged, there are dents all over and it shakes about
because of the loss of aerodynamics. Also powersliding out of the corners
is great fun when you are opposite locking the steering wheel, plus hitting
the witches hats can be amusing....
It's funny watching people play the game and they are frantically
changing gear when it is totally not needed. The first track there is only
one corner that needs a <quick> change down to 3rd before putting the car
back into 4th (also make sure that you put the car into 4th for the rolling
start; as it is amazing how many people I see starting the first track in
1st and then wondering why they fly out of control). Also go easy on the
steering, otherwise you waste valuable speed!
The Advanced track is my favourite and the best time I have
completed a lap in is 44.76 seconds, with 9 seconds left over when I reach
the goal! Again discretion should be used when changing gear; once you have
started (I find the best method is to simply floor the accelarator), the
only gears you should have to use are 3rd & 4th (unless of course you crash
out) and again don't jump onto the brake too visciously!
Unfortunately I cannot give you any advice for the Expert track, as
I tend not to play it as much as the other 2 tracks (usually because I am
playing with a friend and on that track you have to concentrate too much
rather than enjoy bumping each other).
Anyway I have talked for too long and have lecture to goto, so enjoy
the game and I hope that my advice has been of use....Actually I think that
I will skip the lecture and go play some Daytona now!!
Catch U Later, please mail me if you have any comments or suggestions.
