Are these breakdowns happening after contact with other cars, or just out of
the clear blue for no reason?

I've had both.

I lost a header at Bristol....but I have conceeded that I went through
the gears too fast (I use the assisted clutch option as I have no
clutch pedal). I simulated this offline, and when I shift without
lifting, the rpm's go through the roof. That is the only thing I can
think of as when I was going through the gears and got to 4th, I
burned up the engine, and I was done. I could've run around the track
in 3rd, but I would've gotten in the way, especially at Bristol. I now
lift a little when I shift. As for it being caused by damage, I cannot
say either way. John railed me in the back and spun me, but when I
checked my pit board, it said I had no damage (Thanks, John!) That was
on lap 7, and my header went on like lap 55 or so. I wouldn't think
that being hit in the rear would cause engine damage anyhow, but you
never know.

Both, apparantly.

One of the most annoying one's is getting hit in the rear (and clearly ONLY
in the rear) and having it take your motor away.

That's another thing.  Since when does ANY racer park his car because of a
cracked header?

Unfortunately, NR2003 considers that fatal damage (bullshit) and puts you
out of the race.

The whole engine scenario in NR2003 is screwed.  Makes me want to run in
Arcade damage mode.
