Well you CAN, sort of. GEM is an installer though, it does need to
install some files and take the gpl.exe to put out a modified 65gpl.exe,
but it leaves the original GPL intact. The Mod team was quite determined
about that (they didn't want to muck up their own GPL 67 installs either).
So it installs GPL65 "alongside" the original GPL, only takes/modifieds
the files it needs, and puts 'em back into the original state once you
quit 65.
And like I said, you can just click 65gpl.exe and run as usual, only in
65, without using Gem - as long as you stay on the same track.
I had the same reservations as you; but apart from a problem because my
gpl.exe was set to read-ony, haven't had any real problems and the mod
does work for nearly all users.
I don't think you'll be able to do that, since the data is bound to be
buried in several .exes and a lot of different ini-files.
But if you're really hesitant, you could always just copy your GPL
folder to another partition (FAT or non-indexed ;) and tell GEM to
install to that folder. It'll leave your original GPL alone and the only
thing you'll have lost is some drive space. But it's almost guaranteed
you'll gain a lot of fun driving those shiny new 65's, especially if you
liked the F2/F3 classes so far :)
