GPL Frame Rate Hits

by Gennarell » Wed, 16 May 2001 00:22:37

I've been getting frame rate hits when I play GPL. The frame rate goes from
a solid 36fps to 33fps. It doesn't seem like much of a hit but it happens
about every 5 to 7 seconds. It really screws you when racing. It happens
online and offline. I haven't had this problem before. I've haven't added
anything new. Just started happening. My system:

PIII 600
256 ram
V3 3000 (latest drivers)
SbLive
Direct X 8 (latest)
Logitech Wingman FF wheel
TSW pedals
Windows 98se

I use Enditall to close all the programs I don't need. Any ideas?

thanks,

Chris G.

Have you got vsync enabled? that could be your problem either switch it off
in the voodoo properties or set your monitors refresh rate to a multiple of
36 e.g. 72khz.

I have vsync disabled. Also, I can only set my refresh rate to
60,70,75,85,100,120,optimal and adapter default. I have it set to optimal.

Also, I get the frame rates hits and the car is not even moving. I sit in
the pits and watch the frame rate. It takes the hit to 33fps just sitting
there.

Thats sounds like a network search.  Do you have a local net or NIC card?
You may have disconnected a network peripheral and windows is searching for
the lost connection.  One other way to confirm this is to go back to the
windows desktop and start moving your mouse around.  After the same amount
of time as GPL, 5-7 seconds, does the mouse hitch in the arc it should be
moving in?

Two things *every* 3dfx gpl owner should download:

Gary Peterson's voodoo3 utility
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
You can overclock with this, but more importantly you can set all refresh
rates at all resolutions at one time with it.  Use 85hz for everything below
1280x1024, 60-75 above, depending on monitor.  Turn off glide vsync, and
overclock as much as possible as this will help somewhat with texture
loading glitches; start at 172mhz for v3000, I run at 180 with a small fan
mounted.

George Smiley's glide wrapper
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
Use the Resolution Override option to both cure texture corruption if you
see any, and reduce monitor mode switching.  Use MirrorUpdate = 2 to get an
instant 4fps framerate boost.  In GPL also set mirrors to CarsOnly and
uncheck all the mirror texture options.

You should be able to run GPL at 1280x1024 with the hi-res***pits and 3d
wheels and the whole bit on any cpu 700mhz and above with these tweaks.  If
you get periodic glitches they be Windows memory caching pauses or something
related, so go thru all the tweaks here:
http://www.racesimcentral.net/
and make sure joystick polling is unchecked in device manager for your
wheel, and dma is enabled for your HD if available.

Also, in gpl's core.ini  set these variables:

disable_ipx = 1                          ; Disable IPX support
disable_modem = 1                        ; Don't look for/use modems

They aren't needed for offline racing, and don't interfere with vroc, and
gpl will start up faster.

All the solutions so far ask you to change a setting somewhere.
But you stated in your original post that this just started happening
and you haven't added anything new... odd eh?

There were a couple of lines in your mail that stood out to me:

So when did the problem occur? If you have changed NOTHING
and the PC starts acting differently, logically it can only be a
hardware fault or a full hard disk. But of course it depends what
you mean when you say you havent added anything new..
What about the latest Voodoo3 drivers and DX8?
Could the problem have occured just after you added those?

I repeat, if NOTHING has changed on your PC, but programs
start to act differently then either you filled up your HD so the
swapfile cant work properly, or you have a hardware fault.

Im sure something, somewhere, HAS added something new
to your PC.

Does the Glide wrapper fix the problem with large dash textures under
Glide?  I've been happily using D3D on my V5 1024x768 2xFSAA, and have
had to revert alot of car enhancements to run under Glide (for
testing).  W/O the mirror tweaks of the Glide wrapper (using native
GPL Glide support), D3D was as fast or faster than Glide for my setup
(full 3D wheels - the Z-buffer added in the D3D renderer seemed to
make the difference).

Almost all of the recently made***pits now use the split-texture format,
so voodoo3 owners aren't left out any more.

Not if you get HZTool. With htis utility you can set the refresh rate
to whatever you want it to be. Just make sure you don't go over spec
for your monitor.

Could it could be that your hard disk is getting either very full, or
fragmented? Either one could lead to hard disk accesses that would cause
slowdowns.
