GPL with a Matrox Mil G200

by Glenn Lan » Wed, 13 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Has anyone been playing GPL with a Matrox Millineum G200 video card?  I'm
running a P2 350 on an Asus P2B board and 64 megs of PC100 SDRAM and the
best I can get is around 28 fps.  I would like to get it up to 35 for
playability reasons.  I'm running the patch from Matrox to allow me to
select the G200 as a graphics 3d accelerator.  The interesting thing is that
turning the graphics way down doesn't seem to help by more than 2 or 3 fps.
Any suggestions (I know that adding a Monster Voodoo 2 would help, but I
would rather avoid that right now).
Thanks,
Glenn

Hi Glenn,

If you use the alternate view (F10) for outside the car, does it still stay at
28fps?

If so, its probably that the screen is syncing to your refresh rate.  You can
drop to 640x480 (you probably have a refresh of 60Hz or more which should get
you 30fps).  If this works, you *may* be able to increase your refresh rates up
to 72Hz for 36fps but don't go above your monitor specifications.  There is
probably a way to turn off the sync, but I don't know off the top of my head.

Jason.

Jason,
Outside view drops the frame rate to around 17.  Monitor can support up to
85 hz in 800x600.  I have the game set to 640x480 and I'm not sure what
refresh rate it's at.
Thanks,
Glenn

Hi Glenn,

When I get home I'll try my G200 again to verify my fps.  I did get 36fps
out of the thing when I first tried it.

I have Monster3D2 in the same machine and don't use the G200 for GPL.

Jason.

Hi Glenn,

Well this is not good news, but its a start.

I get 36fps in 512x384 mode.  I suggest you turn off the groove and skid marks.
If you still aren't getting 36fps, turn off *all* quality and effects plus set
detail to 0% (full left).

This should get you 36fps.

I cannot believe the G200 (I have the Mystique) cannot do 36fps (with everything
off in 640x480) so there must be some limiting factor in there.

I'm still thinking refresh rate limitations, but I could be wrong.

Still thinking,
Jason.

Oh yeah, the buttons at the bottom of the screen stop working at 512x384 so press
ESC and ENTER to exit.

Hi Glenn,

Ok, I've come to a conclusion on the frame-rate problem.

Since it runs at 36fps in 512x384 mode and in 640x480 the in-car view is faster
than the outside car view, this tells me the G200 is not keeping up with the
demands of 640x480.  You heard of the TNT guys saying the in-car view is slow
compared to outside, right?  Well that means the mirrors are slowing down the
in-car view.  We are experiencing the opposite, slow outside view.  This tells
me the card/drivers are not fast enough.

This might be due to the G200 driver mapping calls to Direct3D.

Anyway, you might want to contact Matrox to see if they got it to 36fps in
640x480.
I may contact them to get 512x384 to work (the lower buttons dont work after
racing).  At least when my P2/333 becomes old with only a G200 I could play GPL
on it at 36fps :)

Jason.
