Does anyone know what the first racing game with interior view (i.e. with
dashboard etc) was? ( besidesFormula One Or Nascar).

My first; G. Crammonds "Revs". C 64 :-)

My fingers still hurt from the keyboard action!

I remember Checkered Flag in Spectrum.

BTW, now that we are talking about Driver and Midtown Madness,
anyone remember Lotus Sprint in the Spectrum? Awesome graphics...
The semaphore ligths were a white pixel, if it was in the top of
the black rectangle was red, in the bottom, green. :-)

The first use of a dashboard that really impressed me was Test Drive
on the C64.

Well I played that one before you on the BBC Micro - with an analogue
joystick!

Unfortunately the BBC joysticks had no "return to centre" action, which
made it pretty tricky to keep in a straight line.

I was also at the launch at the Steering Wheel Club in London trying to
out-hotlap David Hunt (James Hunt's younger brother) who was an F3
driver at the time and helped with the development of the game.

Very interesting to watch his style compared to the simracers - he was
much more controlled, slower into the corners and faster out, and I
never saw him crash, whereas we would tend to get slightly faster
hotlaps but crash a lot more.

My best time was 1:23.9 at Silverstone - how about you?

I also remember racing a lot at Brands Hatch, which was a great track
(but a pale shadow of Dave Noonan's brilliant GPL version!).

Yeah..it was a game I used to play on my Atari 800 back in the 80's.  It was
called Vette by Spectrum Holobyte (I think).  You coudl drive your vette
around kinda like Midtown Madness of today.

Ah - Early hi-techer, eh ? :)

Ah, well the keys were better; They even gave sluggish response, or with
the spacebar down, superfast...lol!

Hehe. Way cool! Yeah, I remember a clone of his Acorn F3 Ralt on the
cover:)

Aw, can't remember......just remember the bad flights on kerbs! And the
instant catchfencing !

Yeah, that was my favourite, fighting Willy Swerve and Dynamic Dan (or
whatever!) on the part up to clearways, and there
even was a female driver (Cathy Muller clone!), can't remember her "alias"
tho:)

That one rocked so much. I probably have more hours in it than in any of the
more recent sims... I bought three games with my C64, Revs+, Chessmaster 2k
and Elite. In retrospect, a good selection. Except that I never once managed
to win a game of chess.

Hehe, yeah. I drove using a SlikStik, remember those? Eventually I had to
press the button REAL hard to shift, sore thumb syndrome all the time. What is
mr. Crammond up to these days? Working at Papy? I wish...

LOL, another SlikStik user? I had one for my Atari that I wore out.
Didn't like the trigger though.

Assuming we're talking PC game, not arcade, my vote goes for "Formula
Nibble", an Apple II game published in the Dec '86 issue of Nibble
magazine... but then I'm kinda biased since I wrote the thing! If memory
serves, I think there was a whole FIVE different hand positions: centered,
mild left or right, and sharp left or right. Hoo-haw!!! There were two
instruments on the dash (speedo & tach) but I can't remember if the needles
moved or not.

Nope, I don't think anybody did. Thumbkiller for sure... The stick itself was
a lot faster to use than the TAC2's most everyone else had though.

Back in '82 -'84 era, there was a driving game for C64 with working guages on dash.
It had black screen with those white posts for edges of road.
It looked solo, though.

There was a "Wilma Cargo" at the back of the field, but I seem to
remember there was a female hot-shoe as well (can't remember the name
though).

I actually dug my BBC Micro out of the cupboard to play Revs a few weeks
ago, which was a bit of an eye-opener - it was absolutely terrible in
comparison to GPL, but as a game it was still surprisingly playable!

I'll fire it up again and make a note of the names!
