AntiVirus and Firewall Software

AntiVirus and Firewall Software

by Jay » Thu, 04 Apr 2002 07:28:05

My firewall (Black ICE by Network ICE) and antivirus (Norton ver 4.x)
software licenses have expired and therefore I can no longer receive
free updates any longer.

They both are still working fine, but I just can't get the latest
"data" files for April.

So... It looks like I'm going to be shelling out a few $$$ to
buy/upgrade to the latest versions or switch to a different product.

My question is this:

The two best antivirus software packages on the market (according to
most experts) are Norton and McAfee. I run Norton on my laptop at work
and it seems to be a resource hog so I'm a bit uneasy about running it
at home and trying to play racing sim's at the same time.

I've been using "EndItAll" at home to shutdown McAfee Virusscan prior
to playing my racing sim's as it can also be a bit of a hog, but which
package has the least impact on top level sims like F1 2001, N4, Rally
Trophy, etc... ??

Ditto with firewall software... I've been very happy with Black Ice as
it has a very small footprint and can even be updated without
rebooting the PC, but it apparently only has a 1 year free upgrade
license.

I've heard good things about "Tiny Firewall" as it passed the leak
proof test http://www.racesimcentral.net/
about the freebees like zone alarm?

Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

If you have the time, format and reinstall windows. I know Norton resets the
license, not sure if the BI phones home for the licence though.
If you want to keep your firewall on when racing then use Nortons. Zonealarm
induces horrible warp.

Anti-virus:  AVG by Grisoft at www.grisoft.com .  I don't use Tiny Personal Firewall since I'm running Windows XP with the built-in firewall, but friends have said they really like it.

Firewall since I'm running Windows XP with the built-in firewall, but

If I may make a suggestion here (even though I may criticize your enjoyment
of the XP firewall).....  The XP firewall only offers protection in one
direction and that's incoming.  There's nothing wrong with that, unless you
have a trojan or something on your system that wants out but you don't want
it to access the internet.  I use Kerio Personal Firewall which is the new
version of Tiny and it's a damn good piece of software.  It offers
protection of both inbound and outbound traffic.  It's also free for
personal use.

On the antivirus side of things.  If you want something small and effective
then give F-Prot a try.  It's DOS based and doesn't offer all the CPU life
sucking, run time features of the larger packages but it does the job.  It
has been rated as one of the most effective virus scanners around with
updates almost daily.

I'll go one step further and call Kerio Personal Firewall one damn bodacious
piece of software.  Highly recommended.

I can second the AVG Anti-Virus choice but only if you are based in North
America... apparently all others get a 30 day trial. I have AVG and I
couldn't believe how well it works for freeware.

Experts say norton is the best AV ?

must be SOME experts...and they would call FORD RACING the greatest sim of
all times ?

The ONLY good NORTON/SYMANTEC products are GHOST and DELRINA

The best "free" AV is probably AVG, then for the "non free" you have
inoculate from CA

Regarding the firewall KERIO really is a step above the others, it is the
evolution of tinyfirewall and it's free.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I'll look into Kerio.  I keep an eye on my systems, which I why I haven't bothered with two-way "protection."  Besides, I hate "training" those programs like ZoneAlarm.  8-)

I find idea of running virusscan in the background is somewhat ridiculous,
so I use good old f-prot from datafellows. I am not sure how it compares
to other products in virus detection though. Good thing about it is that
it consumes no resources (unless you ask it to ;>)

I recommend Tiny Firewall, because of very small overhead. Zone Alarm
has significantly bigger overhead which causes noticable increase
in latency. Tiny Firewall also has better flexibility though setting it
up requires more knowledge.
I was using Zone Alarm in the beginning, but switched to Tiny Firewall
and I am happy about it.

On Kerio Firewall (KPF) check for updates here as there are many (3 in the
past 2 weeks).

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/keriofirewall/

Also a lot of post's with problems in the past few days. :-(

Kaspersky Labs AV works good here..........

http://www.kasperskylabs.com/

A little slow on a all file scan but also checks for corrupted files,
(important).

QuickHeal has found viruses that Norton (NotRun, heh) has missed on my
machine.

http://www.quickheal.com

Sophos is another good AV scanner (I've heard).

http://www.sophos.com/

And so is Computer Associates

http://www1.my-etrust.com/

There is also a hack out there the will revive Norton Updater. I don't know
if it will work on Norton ver 4.x, that's pretty old by todays standard.
Hell I've seen NAV 2002 at stores for $9.99 with rebates. Buy the new
version "Yaa cheap Basstad"!

I did get a spam link for McAfee 6.02 CD with free shipping for $9.95,
but www.free-irewards.com makes me suspicious, gotta be a catch, gave the
link to my brother, let him be the guiena pig, but have'nt heard back from
him, LOL.
Here's the link if you want to check it out.

Good luck, and Happy Siming.

Is it possible to have two firewalls on your system without then causing
more hassle while online racing.
Can you turn the XP firewall off if need be.
