Super 1 Karting -- GPL with little wheels?

by John Bod » Sun, 27 May 2001 05:58:04

With all the mods I've been working on, plus a new daughter to keep up
with, I've kind of drifted away from mainstream activities like the
F1CS2K Rank and the Offline Competition. Mod development and testing
leads to a bit of "burn-out" on certain sims for me, as you must test,
tweak, test, tweak, and then test some more, and that often takes the
"fun" out of whatever title I'm working on or testing. This is why I
often find myself playing around with oddball things to serve as an
enjoyable diversion.

The latest oddball diversion I've found is Super 1 Karting -- have any
of you guys tried this? I had the demo for quite a while, but it
didn't run on my old video card without crashing, so I forgot about
it. After doing a review of a new karting center here in Indy, I found
myself bit by the karting bug, so I fired up the Super 1 Karting demo
-- it ran well on my new GeForce card, and I was immediately ***ed.
I'd have to say that this game is the GPL of karting, and I'm
definitely hooked.

So why hasn't this game made more of a splash here on r.a.s.?  I know
it lacks multiplayer support, but the AI can be pretty tough, it
seems, and the game REALLY seems to have captured the essence of
go-kart physics in much the same way that GPL captured the overall
physics of a 1967-era Grand Prix car.

Are there any dedicated sites for S1K, or any offline leagues on the
Web, perhaps?  Or are there glaring errors that I haven't noticed yet
that have kept the rest of the GPL faithful at bay?  Perhaps go-karts
are too tame for the GPL faithful?  Or are there are a LOT of admirers
of S1K just like me, but I'm just the first one to come out of the
closet? <G>

Great game, and lots of fun.  If you haven't tried it, I'd highly
recommend checking out the demo.

At Last!! I have the full game, and I thought I was the only one in the
world with this!

Good game, especially in full season mode.

John,

I too have the full game. It is a lot of fun. I haven't played with it much
but intend to again soon.

Thom,

Did you try the***pit view?  Also, did you make sure that the "Help"
aids were disabled (steering help is NO help at all -- it just slows
you down and almost makes the game unplayable)?

I think if you've spent any time in go-karts, you might like S1K, but
if you haven't, it might not "feel" right since karts don't feel like
any other type of vehicle.  The "cartoonie" feeling comes from being
so close to the ground and wide-open to the world, I think -- the view
from a kart does look a lot like a "bumper-cam" view in an arcade
racer, for example, and I think this may add to the "cartoonie" feel
you experienced, perhaps.

Anyway, this may be a love it or hate it kind of thing -- if you have
ever gotten behind the wheel of a kart in the past, try to draw on
that to give the game a bit of perspective and see what you think.
IMO, S1K is about as close to racing in a real kart as you can get at
this point (not like S1K has a lot of competition in the sim market,
of course, but I do think it's pretty darn good).

TTYL!

If I may:

"If two of us walked in and bought S1K, they'd think we was fags and
they wouldn't take either of us.  But if three of us walked in put
down our money and bought copies of S1K in full harmony then walked
out, they'd think it was a movement . . . and that's what it is --
it's the S1K Anti-Massacre Movement, and all you've got to do is join
in the next time you find a copy of the full version . . ."

(With all due respects and my most sincere apology to Arlo Guthrie!

I have this and it really is a blast and with the steering mods
suggested mahy moons agp by Randy Magruder it really
does a damn good job of simulating real Karts.

The Tracks are real Tracks (can't comment on their
authenticity though). I'd also echo the comments about the
AI.

I tried the demo and it ran terribly but the full game itself
looks and feels much better.

If you havent modified your steering, try this :

Alter this line to this in USERDATA.TXT

Joy1=16368,49168,32168,33368,354,64400,30768,34768,0,0

It basically reduces the deadzone and makes the steering much
"quicker", feels much less mushy and more Kart like.

In the UK, you can pick this game up for 9.99. Also, it's in the 3 for 20
section of H.M.V.
Bargain ? I think so.

Thanks for the steering mod. I had forgotten about that one. Much better
now!

I second what Max says about the steering mods -- these are the values
I'm using, and they work GREAT!

Be advised, though, that if you have "steering help" enabled, it's
absolutely NO help at all -- it is actually a hindrance, in fact.  I
think the game enables various helps (braking, steering, etc.) if you
run on anything less than "Ace" difficulty mode, so make sure you
check to see if the helps are toggled off.

The developer is a company called Interatctive-Entertainment, I
believe, and I can't find any Web site for them.  The publisher was
Microids, and this is their site:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

S1K is also distributed by Distributed by RealNetworks, Inc, at:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

You can buy the full version of S1K via direct download (27 MB) from
Real.com for $14.99, I believe.
