Argh! Muffled sound in gpl and viper

I guess I'm not meant to have a fully functional computer.  Several months
ago my generic brand sb16 started sending a fuzzy sound through my speakers,
and after some driver changes and some wire wiggling, I found that the
speaker jack on the sound board itself had been pulled on because the wire
from the computer to my subwoofer was too short.  Wiggling the connection
cleared up the static.  Figuring it was time for a new soundcard anyway, I
spent $45 on an sb16 waveffects.  A couple weeks ago while playing viper
racing, the sound cut to about half volume, and I started getting static at
high rpm's.  After a reboot it came back, but now it's cut out in viper and
gpl.  I made sure to get a longer cord for the speakers when I got the new
soundcard, so I'm guessing that's not happening again.  Wiggling it doesn't
help.  I got the newest drivers from creative, that didn't help.
Re-installed dx6, didn't help.  What can't I get normal sound.  I'm using a
set of yamaha yst-ms28's.  I'm gonna try hooking up my old crappy speakers,
but I don't think that's the problem.  Any ideas?
