No more GPL argh...

by Russ » Thu, 05 Jul 2001 16:31:55

At last I have GPL back up and running. Not only the original but add ons
also. I'm a grinnin from ear to ear and I think that I will be annoying John
Crooke from Hyperstimulator soon for some sit in simulator fun.

Thanks to all the responses from previous posts with tips and suggestions. I
don't know exactly what it was and what I did but I will go through the
installation in the hope that it may solve some other probs for people.

If ya don't need to know stop reading now.
I'll give you my sys details:

AMD Athlon 900.
ASUS A7V
IBM 30G 7200rpm ATA 100
Quantum Fireball 8Gb
ASUS 7100 MX
Creative SBLive 5.1 Platinum
Sony Burner
Hitachi DVD/CD
Windows Me

I was originally running everything off the IBM & Windows Me was giving me
the crips, I was having no joy with GPL. Everything was up to date driver
wise and all GPL updates were installed. I was getting screen freezes as I
entered the***pit and I was unable to access add on tracks. So I formatted
and installed 98SE hoping that things would improve. It got worse. My
Logitech wheel wasn't responding and the only way that I could use it was to
designate it as a two axis two button joystick. Very hard to drive.

I reinstalled Me, at least the Logitech was useful then. I also changed hard
drives and reinstalled everything onto the Quantum. I also took note of the
sequence of installation and updating with the results making me very happy.
I installed the Via 4 in 1 for the motherboard first then the video drivers
went in with the standard driver off the CD then the latest 12.6 from ASUS.
With the sound card I selected only the essentials for installation, this
included EAX as I do enjoy some other games. The results are a constant
36FPS on GPL, no freezing and the enjoyment of other tracks.

So I hope that this can help some people that are having trouble with their
sys and GPL, if not I have enjoyed sharing this and again thank everybody
that took the time to reply to prevoius post.

See you on the GPL rank soon.

Hi Russ,

i have a similar configuration as you have but i have
annoying problems.

Every once in a while, the screen freezes and afterwards
GPL runs with 36 FPS again. Not really reproducable,
everytime sound effects involved, different tracks, different
track positions. one lap everything is fine, the next one on the
same location the display stutters.

decreasing resolution, detail bios does not matter, therefore
it is not the Voodoo 3 underpowered.

I think i tracked it down to problems with the PCI bus,
the VIA chipset and the Soundblaster Live. Using my old
SB16PCI reduces the problems a little bit, but not completely.
Disabling the sound reduces it completely, steady 36 FPS all
the time, but this is no option, because GPL is no fun anymore.

I discovered that the PCI bus and connected devices are extremely
unstable with some BIOS settings. Could you give me your bios
revision and your special settings of...

PCI Configuration:
 PCI latency timer

Advanced, Chipset configuration:
 PCI master read caching
 PCI delay transactions
 merged bytes

My specs are :
Asus A7V, Athlon 1200, 256 mb , bios 1008.01e (beta)
Voodoo 3- 3500 AGP
SBLive (tested as Terratec DMX Fire 1024 as well)
RTL 8029 Network Adapter
Windows 2000 professional (SP1, SP2)

thanks in advance,

I am getting the info that you have requested. I have no idea when it comes
to all the tech stuff.

It is interesting that you have mentioned it freezing. My system has just
statrted doing this also. There must be something churning over in the
background.

If you want to find what programs are running in the background, get
task info 2000 from http://www.iarsn.com/index.html#/download.html
It'll tell you if anything is chewing cpu power in the background,
what %age, etc. Only catch is, you can't monitor it while gpl is
running! But very good to check it out just before you open gpl
anyway.

No more GPL argh...

Quick little note for this thread..
A friend of mine has tried and tried to get rid of the occassional
stuttering..  In games such as Motocross Madness2, GPL, and MicrocrapTS no
matter what drivers, format, messed with all the settings everywhere, both
98se and Me etc.. Finally he installed eval vers. of XP on a seperate
partition.. no probs with any games, the stuttering is gone.. He also says
that it is the first time Micro***actually improved an O/S.

   His system is a A7V w. AMD 1.33
   Ultra Vid card
   Tons of ram. etc..

I've never had any of these problems using:
   P4 1.4/1.6
   P4-T MB
   256 rambus mem
   Ultra vid card etc...
    98se/Me
