Is there any way that the car damage can be turned off completely in GPL
(for longer races in GP mode), I am getting fed up with the clutch or engine
breaking. All I want to do is have a decent race to practice my driving.
Whenever I work back up to the front guys in the race the car breaks.

I am running with manual gear shift and I guess the gear changes are over
reving the engine.

I know this will probably annoy the purist out there but what the hell I
want to enjoy the game.

I believe you would select a lower class wothout damage and change a file to
give you more laps. You should post this question at the apex.

Lift off the gas when you shift.  The motor will last much longer.

Keep an eye on your water and oil temp.  When they start to get a little
on the warm side, back off and don't wait so long to shift.

Switch to a more reliable car. (Like Brabham, Murasama, or Coventry)
If you're driving Lotus or Gurney, then expect many breakdowns in longer
races.
If your clutch and engine is breaking, I also suspect your driving style
might be at fault.  With these cars, you must LIFT off the gas when you shift,
otherwise, your clutch and engine won't last 20 laps no matter what you drive.

Here is a previous post answering your question:

This is quite easy and even work for online-racing. :-)

Just open the "67season.ini" file in your "../gpl/seasons" folder and
edit the number of laps for each track. The various realims/damage
levles use different precentages of the total number of laps or the GP
distance.

If i remember right they are:
8% of GP distance for "novice races"
15% of GP distance for "int./pro *short*" races.
30% of GP distance for "int./pro *long*" races.

Like I said these race-lengths can be used in multiplayer races
aswell...
and the good thing is that *ONLY* the host need a modified
"67season.ini"
file.

In the IGPLC we've been using mod. race-lengths since November and that
has worked great! Check out http://home.c2i.net/thepaddock/IGPLC if you
need more examples of what i mean.. :)

I've been driving a Ferrari and I've blown 2 engines in online races
not lifting when up shifting.
