On long races, I suffer a lot of car damage. I don't mean damage
occured by ramming other cars and walls, but damage like 'piston' and
'valve'.
This kind of damage, does it occure because of my driving style, or
does this damage occure randomly?

It's SO annoying that after 50 laps I suddenly see smoke in my
mirrors...

I think it's your driving style.

When you change gear you have to release the accelerator pedal to avoid high rpm
that could damage pistons and valves.

Mostly caused by driving style by over reving the engine. Or sometimes
it's just bad luck, like when it blows up on the start finish line
before the flag is even shown.
Lift then shift and don't downshift too fast.

Which car are you driving? I can only make a few laps in the Lotus
before I kill it with the damage model set to anything other than
None! Yes, I am *** them old cars! So I never drive the Lotus.

Ouch....you need to try learning how to be easier on the car!  That is one
possible real-world benefit of GPL--you'll save more on real car repairs
than the game cost you 10 times over!!!

I drive the Lotus mostly, especially on Monza. Mostly after 30 laps it
breaks down. I just drove another race, and I paid attention to being
very carefull with the car. It didn't break down, but it costed me
some laptime. I made it to lap 43, but then I made a stupid error
after passing Bandini just before the 1st Lesmo. I hit him a little
bit, I could drive on immediately, but after that I couldn't steer to
the right very good. Oh well, let's try again.

The Lotus wasn't particularly known for it's durability in 1967.  It's high
probability of breaking down is modeled in GPL if you use realistic damage.
You'll have to treat it VERY gently or run shorter races with all realism
options on to increase your chances of seeing a finish with it.

I drive the Eagle. I find that I really have to watch it at Monza. If I go
even a bit over the redline (even a bit under I think)
the engine always starts to run rough and lose a lot of power on the last
lap of a 6 or 11 lap race (I haven't run longer races).
However anywhere else I run I can go over the redline and still make it to
the end. I'm not sure if this happens in other cars
but be aware of it.

I've adjusted my top gear at Monza so the revs stay a healthy distance below
the redline. I also make a special effort to keep
the revs in check in pressure situations. I try to defend and drive a smooth
optimum line rather then trying to power (or overpower)
away from the opposition.

If it always happens during the last lap, no matter whether it's the
6th or 11th, you might be running out of gas rather than experiencing
a mechanical failure. Try adding a bit more fuel prior to the race and
see what happens. Cautious short-shifting during the race might save
just the amount of fuel you need for the last lap, which would explain
why the phenomenon does not occur when you shift earlier.

If you're burning out the Eagle after 6/11 laps, then you're abusing
it :-)

I'm doing a lot of 22 lap races on Monza, and i normally run laps
somewhere between 1.28.7x to 1.29.xx, and i NEVER blow the engine, or
lose power.

The only times that my engine has died on Monza is during the start,
where I sometimes get a little over-e***d :-P

Hi Jim,

Nah you shouldn't worried about the Eagle, you drive it so well... Perhaps
you should worry more about your ISP tho, with all those disco's....Hehe.

Of course! I never even thought of fuel. I'll give it a try. Thanks

Thanks Lars. If Wolfgang's suggestion of too little fuel is right then I
think can push the old Eagle a bit more
and win all my races :-)   (well ok, *stay* in all my races).

I'm now about to finish my 3rd season driving the Lotus at Grand Prix
level and, as yet, have only had a couple of times when the car has
given up on me - I tend to go out by having an accident.  This doesn't
mean that I am slow either.  I can win races that I finish.  You guys
really are just driving the cars too hard.  Don't speedshift, don't wait
till the redline to change up and, when braking for a corner I try to
wait until I'm ready to turn in before I finally pop it into the last
and appropriate gear for that corner.  Also, make sure that top gear has
plenty of room.

Oh, and a couple of other things that I've just noticed.  I will always
change up a gear, rather than redline it, even though I may start
braking a second later for a corner.  Also, if I get any wheelspin that
causes redlining when accelerating out of a corner I immediately change
up.

And here I thought all along that you had a "disco" button that you pressed
when I was in the lead. I apologize :-) .

Actually the disco's are decreasing lately but I always get one immediately
after logging onto any race on the GPLRC
server (not sure if I have the name right). I then reconnect and everything
is fine for practice and race. Anyone else
get that? I get into the main racetrack screen but with practice time
showing 0:00. I then press the green button to
go to the pits and *poof*, I'm bumped out and get a reconnect dialogue. I
choose "ok" and I'm back to the race
with no problems at all.

By the way, thanks to whoever set up that server. I have had a blast running
many great races with people there.
