Thanks, still suffering from hangover since the traditional way of
celebrating is getting very drunk the night before :)

Just waiting for some friends now to join watching the parades, and then
there is a mighty lunch coming up soon.

They're :-) celebrating that in 1814 Norway went from being ruled
by the danes to being ruled by the swedes...

Usually celebrated by drinking lots of Carlsberg, wearing traditional
costumes from the time period when they were ruled by the danes and
parading in front of and waving and cheering to descendants of the
danish royal family.

It all makes perfect sense after those Carlsbergs.

I'm not Norwegian, but I celebrate May 17th because it is my dog, Doodles,
birthday.

http://www.snakefoot.com/doodles.htm

Doodles is recovering from his latest slipped disk, so he can't celebrate
too much.

I'm going to drink a bunch of Molson XXX that a friend recently brought me
back from a trip to Canada and parade around my yard in my traditional
dress:  sweatpants, tshirt and a baseball cap.

With all respect for foreign traditions but..
this sounds stupid :))
Sounds to me like they're just using every available cheap excuse to
keep a party and get drunk :)

So Olav, Ed, Stian, Matt and all other Norwegian GPL'ers are now
walking around totally drunk in weird costumes..
I wish I never asked :)

Independence day? But I just read that you were taking over by Sweden
on that date? Oh well, enjoy the beer and the party :)

Well..... it's the day our constitution (sp?) were "signed and sealed" -
That, to me, is independence :-)

Maybe, but somehow noone ever figured out that getting their own
government was cause for celebration. (9. (?) April 1905.)
Nor do they celebrate the day the Germans resigned and started
withdrawal after WWII after five years of occupation.
