DTR : Pretty impressive little 9meg demo!

Ok I think I've fallen into the Wizard Works trap ;-)

The demo is pretty good, for it's size ! 3tracks, 3car types.  It's very
fun, the AI is very aggressive and kicks me arse on all car types except the
Modified.  I would guess it's because they have locked the setup menu, but
you can look at it at least to see what option there will be.  The Gameplay
is very versatile, I say "Papyrusesque" in the number of options they give
us.  I still have problems with the auto-pilot, it looks like Im running
Daytona USA.  The sound is the weakest point in the demo, I simply cannot
feel with the sound how my car reacts.  For us simmers it's eyes and ears,
we need those two at their best.

Still a very nice entry into the sim market by Ratbag.

<snip me>

More stuff ;-)

I wish from the bottom of my heart to view the races I have done already
with a Replay feature.  I've done what a dozen races, and I can think of at
least 4-5 that I would give anything to replay.  It has to be put in a
patch, please no "in the next product you will have to pay for".

Also, the AI loves to race in a pack, don't fear the sheet-metal banging, it
seems that a Dirt car (which I am not sure) has no problem bumping into each
other.

What's Half-lock steering ?

And finally, nice framerate and smooth graphics.  That really impressed me.
Even if I would love more vibrant colors, even if it's a dirt sim.

Definitely agree! What's strange to me Is there Is a very nice (so I'm told)
spectator view online that pans with mouse control then click to zoom, which
begs the questions; Will the internet let us use the spec view and with
external view(s) already modeled...why not use them for a replay option?
Makes no sense at all!

BTW, It's fun as Hell though :)

I installed the game without installing DirectX7 and it seems to work
without any problem. Of course, I run the game in Glide, that might
explain this.

This was the beta testers' argument as well -- I think Ratbag was strapped
for time to be honest, and the replay option took a backseat to the physics
modeling and the online coding.  Not a bad tradeoff, I'd say.

Word has it that DTR2 will DEFINITELY feature a replay option.

So far I love this demo. One of the most impressive things is that they
managed to pack almost 60 megs down to under 10. At first I thought it would
be another run of the mill 1 car, 1 track disappointment.  Thankfully I was
proven wrong.
Look forward to the final product

I forgot about that !!! the most impressive thing I've ever seen is that
online viewing spectator option. You have the choice of moving your virtual
camera on ANY spot on the track, in a free XYZ environment.  So you want to
look at the whole race from the grandstands ? Your able !  And the
prediction code is very good, so your watching some incredible fun racing
from anywhere you want. _that_ is a revolution for the future of online
racing, imho.

I guess they could simply show us a TV feature where they could implement
XYZ positions around the track.. It's not easy, but not hard also.  They
said IIRC it would appear in the next version of DTR. That's the price we
have to pay for the cheapness of the software (20$).

It suggests that DX7 is necessary, but asks if you want to install it.
I choose no, and it runs fine under DX6.1.
