Wow MS sure is amazing....1.5 million copies...well hell that means
something. Course there was a little saying I picked here that I kinda
like...

Something along the lines of "We should eat shit everyday....10billion
flies cant be wrong"...

And yes there is something wrong with my system it began about
10minutes after installation of Win98....coincidence...ummmm Nahhh.

I just realized I better explain myself before something bad happens.

1. You have XYZ Wonder Card 3d Original Drivers installed....now Wonder
Card announces a new Driver that promises 4,000% improvement for your
286....oooh my I must have that driver...<VBG> Anyways when you
originally installed the driver the inf of that particular driver was
stored for reference in as far as I know 2 places. Both of these places
reside in your Windows folder (my case Win98 but thats another sad long
story...) anywho....one is "config folder" the other is called in a
spate of brilliance by Microsoft the " INF folder"...(oh my somebody
smart got by the personnel department at MS).... Now Ive found that the
only realiable way to insure the correct installation of drivers is for
me to first delete both inf files regarding the particular
driver...(easy to find since it usually goes by the name of the inf
found in your set of new drivers....look inside the package containing
the drivers ie exe file zip file or the like)....I delete both these inf
files then I go to device manager and select the device and do
properties. Select update driver and browse to the folder you have your
new set of drivers in.....then select next...and hopefully Uncle Winky's
brand new broken OS will find them and correctly install them....fun fun
fun....

PS...btw many people are not understanding that the Voodoo2 reference
drivers are attempting to outsmart many by putting variables in
different area's...then if you use something like tweakit....(not a good
idea btw) it also puts more variables in different areas...now you have
effectively lost control of your Voodoo2 card...boy is that fun.
Actually it pisses me off tremendously....I couldnt figure out why I had
all of a sudden lost control of my Gamma Settings...anyways I will post
an article about this tonight under an original header. 3dfx Voodoo 2
has disappointed me with those type of shenanigans...

Hmmm I don't seem to have this problem. It just tells me my current
might be better and ask if I'm sure. I say yep and away it goes.
course mybe I just never notice it going back , I'll have to check.

I always do a select form list then browse to the folder. Is this how
you do it ?

I learned that one a long time ago.
I think another way is to go into safe mode and then device manager.
When in safe mode it shows all devices you have had installed (I
believe it is listing the inf files it as.) if you delete the ones you
don't really have install it rebuilds the data base.

Wow, sorry to hear you guys had so much trouble. WIN98 installed without
a hitch. All-in-all, I like the upgrade. If it's worth the $89 is
subjective. I wonder what about your setups that caused so much
consternation? I guess we will never know. Do you guys have anything ***
in your systems (by *** I mean things that outside the norm for sim
junkie add-ons)?
Personally, I like IE4 and don't mind the integration at all. I do have
Netscape 4x and use it as well.  I think Outlook express is a great
e-mail/news reader suite. The Windows Update function is a nice touch. I
don't seem to have the slow down that some have with the active desktop
turned on. I do think adding the active channels to your desktop is junk as
well as the channels bar - hogs up way to much desktop space as well as
covers up your background.
I think what is  amazing is that MS has sold something like 1.5 million
copies so far.
    Food for thought.  :)
