My brother has WinNT 4.0 and i'm still with Win95.  I can't believe how fast
32-bit programs run under NT 4.0 with a 32-bit optimized CPU like the Pentium
Pro and Pentium II. Shesh, i can run Quake2 at 800x600 with no 3D acceleration
and it runs around 15-20fps. Even with my overclocked P233 to P292 i can't
manage more than 6-7fps at that resolution.

I will thank the stars when i upgrade in two years...WinNT 5.0 (DX6!!!), Dual
CPU support.  When you want to increase the performance, just pop in another
CPU. No more ripping out motherboards every 12 months. :-)

WIN 98, yes, no?

by Jerry Moreloc » Tue, 28 Jul 1998 04:00:00

98 gave me fits when I tried to overrule its driver choices, too.  Had much
better luck when I decided to just let it go ahead and install whatever the
h-- it wanted to, then changed them later.  More time consuming that way,
but less bothersome.  My first attempt at trying to force 98 to take the
latest V2 drivers ended up with me having parts of two V2 driver versions
and no access to my computer "properties" window.  Doncha just love these
attempts at "idiot proofing"?  98 has lots of "little things" that make it
better than 95, but I wish that MS had just skipped 98 and went directly to
the next NT.  More money this way, I guess.

What I don't understand is why someone would take the time to post something
so petty, whilst adding absolutely nothing constructive to the thread
themselves. It's all a bit sad really.

Also I fail to see how - from what I posted earlier - one could conclude that
I am so obviously an "idiot". I make my living with my computer (digital
graphic artist), for me it's a very important tool as well as being a great
source of entertainment. I state quite proudly that I'm no 'tech-head', all
that matters to me is that my machine runs in a reasonably stable fashion
(and plays my favourite sims :-)), Win '98 provides that stability where '95
didn't, period. If that makes me an idiot for handing over the cash for '98
(which BTW I can write off as a business expense) then so be it, I'm an idiot
- and a satisfied one at that.

What I don't understand is why you felt the need to call someone else
an idiot. Prozac run out? Why take it to that level? Why does everyone
have to agree with you?

I do, Admitted I use games with native Glide support but I use DirectX5 Beta
for NT and I get sound with F22 ADF. I also get to run Quake 2 in normal mode
compared to the compatablity mode required normally by NT. There have been
other games I have used but these two remain on my harddrive, the rest just
come and go.

Piers B.

PS until NT 5 arrives Direct 3D will not be properly implemented but you can
use software Direct 3D if your desperate or maintain a dual boot rig like I do.
Any native Glide game goes on NT though cause it dumps all over Win95/98.

The OSR2 version of Win95 supported FAT32 as well, go 'back' to that
if you don't like Win98. What other improvements have been made since
OSR2?? My system almost never crashes, I guess those who have stability
problems on theis computers have installed like fifty different mpeg
codecs and 5.000 plug-ins for Netscape..

Well thats a great idea....now if Microsoft will sell me the OSR2
version I will be happy to oblige. I only have the very first
wonderful attempt at madness from Microsoft...OSr1

Also my computer routinely has 98% resources free...its not the
crashing that bothers me...hell Im used to that with win95....its that
dumb idiots way to install drivers that bothers me. Ive even sat in my
chair dumbfounded as Windows 98 decided on its own after being shown
by me the folder to scoop the newest drivers to switch folders and
scoop the older set...then it is so kindly in informing me that it has
a better set in folder three.....oooh me....oh my...or worse yet
installing a combination of both.

The more they make it idiot proof the more difficult it becomes in
setting up beyond the average config that Microsoft believes we should
have....now of course I and all of the others will find ways around
this new way...but its a real pain in the ass. In closing if Win95
OSr1 or 2 is NOT broken on your computer DO NOT INSTALL 98.

Oh have I mentioned its significantly slower in some games....just a
little sideshow from Uncle Winky.

Since this is rec.autos.simulators, I really don't care how many browsers and
dweeb-a-thons I can run.  Oh, yeah.  What racing sims are coming out for Linux?

MW
running 2 browsers lets me get flamed twice as fast.

Its not you....this new operating system just has to be one of the
largest steps backwards a company ever made. Matter of fact if I
thought that a significant portion of money was tied up in whether MS
Win98 was great I would sell the stock short. Of course I think this
is just a plot to force us to buy NT5.0...ummm

This behaviour first happened to me with OSR2 - but you can get around it.
When changing drivers go to select a driver from database or list? then
choose
your older driver from the list that you want to use and show the way to
where
its driver files are extracted.
If you hadn't installed the older driver first before the newer driver you
might not be able to do
this - If you have the DirectX5 SDKit you can force overwrite all drivers
and then you'll
be able to reinstall all your drivers old to newest.

It is a pain in the arse but better than reformatting.

I got a 15% better frame rate with timedemo 0.2 in unreal with high
detail textures after installing W98- but only a 5% improvement with low
detail
textures.  Win 98 seems to always creates a virtual swap file even if you
have free RAM!!
I found setting a maximum vcache limit removed occasional pauses in unreal.
Why 98
works so much better with detail textures has something to do with the
caching it uses.
15% better with high detail textures on a 8Mb V^2- I love W98 for that.

It looks like MS thinks that if they installed the driver during set
up that it is the best one. But what's the big deal just say your sure
and install the other.

BP unfortunetely its not that simple....see even if you point it to
the right folder it will act like its gonna do it right and then poof
when you select next it goes back to the original folder. Neato.  Of
course there is a way around this crap....thats to delete the original
INF for the driver your installing...fun fun fun...wonder how many
people know that trick.
