ACT Labs RS Wheel Compatibility Questions

by Allstarn » Wed, 27 Aug 2003 14:02:29

Thanks to the excellent assistance from 'Aidee' I have sucessfully managed
to get my Act Labs RS (non-FF, gamport model) wheel running under Win XP
with quite a number of games.  But some of them are proving a bit more
difficult to get to run smoothly than others, so i've come to get some help
from you guys as i'm sure somebody has had the same issues as I have.

I've just been playing it in the following games and have had some issues:

F1 2k, IRL Indycar Series demo - runs great, no problems whatsoever

[Australian] V8 Challenge (EA Sports). - I can't seem to calibrate this
properly at all.
It seems to want to put the handbrake on constantly or drive in rear view.
I've tried using the Act-Labs RS force setup, the 4 button one, and a custom
one and they all seem to go a bit loopy in some way or another.

TOCA Race Driver/V8 Supercars - This seems to work ok, except that the
accelerator seems
to be on the left rather than the right.  It seems to be quite difficult to
callibrate the controls for this too.  It doesn't seem to let me have many
options for calibration at all.  Have you got any tips/ have you
played this??

Maybe I should post this as another more general post now.  It seems to be
getting a bit buried down here :-)

Haven't tried other games yet.  Will be interested to see how the NASCAR
games [Nascar 2k3 and Nascar 2] run, especially since they ran like a pig
using a keyboard.

Thanks for your help

PS Where's button 1, 2, 3 & 4 on the wheel.  There's lots of buttons that I
can see.  I haven't got around to figuring out that whole macro thing either
yet.  I'll do it when I get some more time.  I have downloaded something
called RBJoy which is meant to help, though I haven't had time to play with
it yet.

ok here we go...

V8 Challenge i have not played so sorry there.

Toca Race Driver i have and it works perfectly, but i do remember some people
had this switched pedals problem and there was/is a simple cure.

Best read the Toca Race Driver forums.

http://community.codemasters.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=73baacd4947...

Nascar works perfectly and IMO has the easiest controller set up.

Tools you might find very helpful are the stuff at Wingman Team

http://www.wingmanteam.com/latest_software/gadgets.htm

My overall advice is that all games do controller setup/calibration very
differently some are a joy to setup and some are pigs(Rally Trophy!!) so a
little imagination is required sometimes and a very open mind...lol

Its a great accurate wheel you have so enjoy it mate.I have many sites if
you want to enhance it or make improvements.

Again just ask...

<snip>

Thanks again for your help.

I managed to fix most of the problems myself in the end during the course of
the day.

V8 Supercars.  One of the axis buttons was assigned to look back, all I did
was change that button to something on the keyboard

Racedriver.  I just assigned the pedals to different functions, getting both
of them in there was a bit of a mission, but once i did it works fine.

Now the only thing that remains to be done is to get the rest of the buttons
working alright, so maybe you know a bit about  this too :-)

How do I get the gear levers, 6 buttons on the inside of the wheel, and the
d-pad to work???  The Windows drivers that it's using the the are for the
2-axis 4 button generic controller (which is what Act-Labs said to use for
this wheel).  I have no idea how to get these buttons to work.  I tried to
use the RS Profile manager to assign keystrokes to the buttons and then tell
the game to use those keystrokes to do what i wanted.  But that doesn't seem
to work in anything.  Any ideas??

Thanks once again

When calibrating in Game Controllers which buttons do you press as the 4
buttons..?

Mine is slightly different to yours as i also have the Act Labs shifter
which blocks two of the buttons so i only have 5 on the wheel now not
7(only..lol)

When i calibrate i do everything it asks of me then i press all the buttons
at the end before clicking Finish, this lights up the ones that are
functional.

Let me know ...

Being new to this whole calibration thing, i kind of missed the whole point
of pushing all the buttons I wanted to use.  I guess i'll have a play later
on today, when I have some time.  :-)

Thanks once again for your help

I managed to get the four buttons working ok (2 gear shifters + middle
button on either side).  Is it possible to get the other 4 buttons to work??
If so how??

Thanks

I asked Act-Labs about this and got the following reply:

Hello,

Unfortunately, there are no drivers for the Gameport cartridge on
that wheel.  It is not possible to get around this situation other than
purchase a USB cartridge and power adapter.  With the USB cartridge, you
will have full button use minus the Force-feedback.

Have no idea if this will work, especially with XP, but try one of the drivers
at http://www.massey.ac.nz/~jcmarsha/Wheel/  (click on "Drivers")

Using the 10button+pov driver instead of the 2axis-4button driver *may* allow
the extra buttons to be detected.

Good luck
Ken
PS The current USB cartridge is not worth buying, it gives very poor wheel
resolution (about 100 points). It'd be easier and much cheaper to get a gameport
to USB adapter, most of which give a least 128 points (which is still not
great).  Before spending the money on the USB Cartridge and power supply, look
at what it would cost to get another entirely new wheel.

Thanks for that advice Ken, unfortunately my system didn't seem to like that
driver on the site.

I'm quite happy with my wheel, it's 1000x better than a keyboard anyhows,
even if it is only entry level.

The funny thing about that link you gave me is that the university that
hosts it, is 5 minutes from my house :-)
