As the GPL game continues to "age" and no true replacement is in sight,
I'm wondering if we'll be saddled with some of the problems that happen
when you want to keep playing other "legacy" games. Mainly, am I sort
of locked into 3DFx cards now? GPL was written for Glide, so I guess I
have to keep using a card that supports that API. Since all the cards
support DirectX now and new games are all written for that standard,
are we eventually going to be in trouble?

There is a DirectX patch for GPL available at www.papy.com
It is designed for NVidia graphics cards and works with many others.
Cheers,

Newsflash!  There is a Direct3D patch for GPL available at the Papyrus site
(www.papy.com).  Now you can have your cake and eat it too.

Papy released a beta Direct 3D patch a few weeks ago so now your not stuck
with a 3dfx product. Just go to www.papy.com and download it.

Won't bother me one bit, i built a system for GPL when it came out and it
still works fine.
Good ole 8 meg Thriller runs at 36 fps......even at Imola, and yes i have
all the graphics on.

Well, 3dfx cards support D3D and OpenGL, so I don't see any problem with
owning one.  The V5 5500 has plenty to recommend it whether you play GPL or
not, as will be the case for the V5 6000 when that is released.
And with OpenGL and D3D support in GPL now you don't even need a 3dfx card.
So GPL clearly has a future.
The problems will arise when Glide support is dropped from the next set of
3dfx cards (or so i've heard) and maybe at some point in the future GPL will
no longer work with the current D3D patch on newer cards with new versions
of DirectX.  At that point we'll need Papy's help again in keeping the game
going.

Hi Simon!! I went out and bought the Voodoo 5 on your and others
recommendation and indeed I am very much impressed with this wonderful
card!! Great framerates and beautiful visuals and in addition I can play
some of my older glide games!! Most pleased indeed!!

This probably sounds like an unlikely coincidence :), but I'm off to pick up
my V5 tomorrow, just in time for GP3.  I'm looking forward to trying GPL
with 2x FSAA, hopefully it will still be very fast.
Over the last few days i've been looking at lots of benchmarks for the V5
and GeForce 2 GTS, and the V5 is the faster card in D3D, and the faster card
in OpenGL when 2x anti-aliasing is used.  So I'm convinced we've both made
the right decision.
Here's to happy ***!
Simon.

I use the D3D patch with my V5 and get great framerates at 1024x740with
2xfsaa.  HOWEVER there is at this time NO WAY to use 2xFSAA with the glide
GPL.  You can get the 4xFSAA working with a lower rez screen and that looks
pretty dang good.

Sorry if this sounds rude...but have you been under a rock for the past
few weeks?  There's a D3D rasterizer now, and guys with GeForces are
laughing in our pathetic V2 user faces!! =P  Check www.papy.com and have
fun...

Probably it's only me....

but I don't feel stuck with my V3.

Tried D3D, got almost the same framerate, switched back to 3DFX-mode.
