GPL & Win95 - Back To The Future

by m » Mon, 21 Jun 1999 04:00:00

In a last ditch effort to get GPL to run smoothly on my system, I
went backwards in time.  Dug out my old Win 95 CD & installed it.

This is *old* Win95, 4.00.950 A.  It's so old, when I fired up
IE, it was Version 2.

Getting it to recognize some of my hardware proved daunting but
GPL runs as smooth as *glass*. After two 21 lap races at Monza &
Silverstone, I experienced *no* "hiccups".

None. Nada. Zip.

SB Live had no pops or crackles despite not having any setting
for hardware acceleration.

Goodbye, Win98. So long, IE 5. Adios, OS / browser combo.

Hello GPL.

As seen elsewhere....

"Windows 98 is a buggy browser running on top of a 32-bit
extension and graphical shell for a 16-bit patch to an 8-bit
operating system  originally coded for a 4-bit microprocessor,
written by a 2-bit company  that can't stand 1 bit of
competition."

GPL & Win95 - Back To The Future

I'm about to buy a GPL setup - PIII450 or 500 with 128Mb, V3 (got that part
already), SBLive or MX 300 (I've heard the MX300 is better for gamers but
SBLIve sounds better for GPL - so probably the SB) I -was- going to upgrade
to Win98 too to make better use of the hardware, but now you're putting me
off.

What's your setup?

I have heard that Win98 is more of a memory hog.

SNIP

Get Win98! You can always get rid of the IE4 UI if you want to.

I have a Celeron at 464 mhz, V3 3000, SBlive, 128 mb ram. GPL is
ultra-smooth with this setup in 1024x768, win98.

There's been only a few posts regarding graphic "hiccups" in GPL.
It seems there could be several causes, from gameports to 3D
drivers, etc.

I tried everything regarding hardware. Swapping PCI slots,
swapping sound & graphic cards & installing a PDPI L4 gameport.
Same goes for software. I tried various drivers my VooDoo II's,
tried Liveware 2.0 for the SB Live, etc.

Nothing had any affect on the "hiccups".

Installing Win95 was a last resort. However, on *my* machine, GPL
no longer "hiccups" with Win95.  Getting Win95 to recognize my
IDE hardware was a bit of a hassle but after installing some
fixes, Device Manager is no longer confused.

If I were you, I'd try Win98 first.  You can always flop back to
Win95 if you have any problems.

PII 450, 128 MB RAM
Intel 440 BX
Asus P2B-F
3DFX (STB)  VooDoo II's in SLI ( Quake III 3DFX ref drivers )
SB Live ( LiveWare 1.0 )
PDPI L4 gameport
Nascar Sprint ( calibrated as Nascra Pro )

128 MB should be plenty for *any* OS.

Personally, I find Win98 to be more buggy than Win95.  Many apps,
including GPL crashed quite a few times.  Since installing Win95,
GPL seems solid as a rock.

BTW, I think the SB Live & the Diamond MX 300 are both good
cards. But GPL *does* sound a little better with the SB Live. I
would however, caution against upgrading to Liveware 2.0. It's
a 30MB download and bloats your registry to upwards of 8MB.
