using a wheel w/ SODA demo

I just loaded the SODA demo and to my suprise, had no control what so
ever!  I'm using a Thomas Super Wheel Calibrated under a normal "2 axis
two button" joystick in Win95.  When the race starts, I just sit there.
No response to the wheel or pedals at all.
Is the standard "2 axis 2 button" setup not DirectX compatible?  Another
thought, I remember seeing that DirectX won't recognize the first joysick
in Win95's list.  You have to use number two on the list or greater. True?
Or is my memory failing me?
Oh ya, I'm runngin DirectX 5.0.  I know it's installed OK because Jedi
Knight works fine.

Thanks,
-Bill

In the demo you start at the start\finish line in neutral, be sure to put it in
first gear. I was having the same problem until i noticed the gear in neutral.
I`m using a T2 and it works fine with it although the graphics are choppy full
 blast.

I also had this problem, it turned out that the SODA demo needed me to
calibrate the wheel (I am using a thrustmaster GP1) from within the SODA
demo (in the control settings menu).  It seems that the demo does not
use the settings from the normal win95 joystick control panel, but
instead uses its own calibration system like a DOS game would.

Good luck

Bill, et. al.,
I'm just on my way to Deja-News, to go over some "Win95 won't recognize my
.......". My TMNPW works fine on the DOS side of things, but I can't get the
"Pro-Panel" -or- just Control Panel to see it. I keep getting either a
generic "error" or "not connected properly" message. This is only a prob due
to SODA DEMANDING to be run in Win....I have tried both Seperate and
combined on the pedals, but that made no diff. Going investigating as soon
as I'm done reading everyones weekend exploits here...including my own, of
running the BGN Track Pack update on a Network, and having to redo my entry
list to get in the 40 entries required (OK, so I could only get 39 in the
list, but it got rid of the "40 entries required" error message.;-)).

Yeah, I think it DOES have something to do with DirectX 5. I'm running
the SODA demo fine with my TSW, although it's configured thru Win95 as
"custom" with 2 axes, 2 buttons and the "special features (is a race
car controller)" box checked. But, I have DirectX 4.

No you don't....no such thing as DX4.

But I have the same setup as you with a TSW and the demo works fine.  I
have DX5 installed, so that's certainly not the problem.  Have to make
sure that the device you're using is Controller ID #1 for SODA, just
like most Win95 games seem to need.

I dunno if the programmers aren't writing the stuff right, but this sort
of negates the advantage of having 16 device numbers available..
