OT: V5 5500 & Win XP Probs? Geforce 3 instead?

by Joe Marque » Tue, 30 Oct 2001 06:53:45

I'm waiting for the following components to arrive tomorrow:

AMD 1600+ (1.4 Ghz)
512 Corsair DDR 2100 Ram
60 Gb IBM HD (7200 rpm)
Santa Cruz Sound Card
Lite On 16x DVD/CD-Rom
Enlight 7237Z Case (340W PS)
ECS K7S5A Mobo (Reportedly stable, XP compatible and cheap)
Windows XP Home Ed.

I still haven't settled on a video card, so here are my questions:

1) I have an old rig with V5 5500 that I'd like to use in the new system
except that I've heard there is no glide or open gl drivers for Win XP.
Anyone using V5 5500 with XP?  What's the scoop?

2) I'm considering the Gainforce Cardexpert GF3 Golden Sample as a
replacement for my V5.  Any opinions by users of this card or any GF3?

I mainly play F1 2001, GPL, Falcon 4 and will pick up Ghost Recon and a few
shooters.  I still think the V5 kicks ass in sims (even compared to GF3) and
I just don't want to give it up without a fight.

TIA

Hang in there, I follow your thoughts about the V5, still using it with
great pleasure, albeit on a WinMe based platform (epox 8kha+, 1700+ showing
1900+ ;-)). Nothing comes close to the v5 in the sims/games I'm into yet.
the gf3 people can run the q3/3dmark2001-game as long as they want. I spend
my time having fun instead, playing gpl with fluid graphics/2xAA.

The scoop? The worst thing I heard was that m$ had everything they needed
to ship xp with builtin support for v5 but nVidia stopped it. have no idea
where i got it from, probably some x3dfx/v5-forum. good news is that people
are developing installation tools to get the 11/2000-versions of the
drivers working in xp. I haven't tried the tools myself - I will never use
xp because m$ have pulled the licensing/registering string too far. I would
rather give win2000 a chance as a *** platform if you need multi-cpu
support or if you're buying the "stable" bit of the marketing crap. when
did your win98se/winme crash last time? (sad to hear that you have already
spent your money on xp but that's not my business).

more info on the v5/xp-issue here (forum):
http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Good luck, (I would wait a couple of months instead of wopping out cash for
the gf3 (because of the nvidia "handling" of 3dfx customers/nv25 coming out
this winter?), and let the ati8500 get a chance (drivers could be an issue
still at ati, which would be a tragedy)).

I wish that I could tell you where to get them, but I've been told that there
_are_ working Glide drivers for XP.  (They work with a V5).  So, there's no need
to jump to a GF3, if you really want to stick with the V5.

Hopefully, someone with more specific knowledge of these drivers will respond
here in a day or two.

Good Luck.

You can get XP drivers for most of the 3DFX cards here. V3/4/5 are
down near the bottom.

Thanks to all for the help. I found working drivers that enable D3D and
Glide.  So far no problems running NHL 2002 and F1 2001.  I'm still
installing games so I'm not out of the woods yet.  The V5 does pretty well
with the AMD 1600+.  I do think it's now the bottleneck since my fps are
still not great in F1.

Sorry to add up on an old post.

I build a similar system this weekend. Epox 8kha+, xp 1600, 512 MB DDR
ram, SB Live Player 1024 and the good old V5. Fresh install of WinME

And right now I'm really disappointed. I hardly get any increase in
framerates at all. In GPL at testing at Monaco I don't get more than
30 fps at 1280x1024 2xfsaa, with the details slider at 50 %. In N4 I
get around 30-35 fps at Lowe's in testing at 1024x768 2xfsaa. I really

I saw another post where the poster claimed 40 fps at 1600x1200 no
fsaa, but I ended up with around 20.

There is probably someting very wrong somewhere...

It's your video card.  I ditched the V5 shortly after the system upgrade
because I was unimpressed with the performance.  I bought a GF3 Ti 500 and
the system smokes.  I ran the N4 demo at over 80 fps with 2xFSAA.  F1 2001
40+ fps with a full field of cars at Monaco (35+ at start of race mid pack).

I just upgraded my v5 to a gef and I love it. Newegg sells the gainward gf3
for $239. Windows xp does not support voodoo cards. There is no glide and on
opengl period. You can run gpl in d3d but it does not look real good and it
is slower.  My gf3 can go 1600x1200 at a constant 36fps.
