PII400, Voodoo2 and GPL .... is this normal?

A friend of mine has a PII400 with 128Mb RAM,AWE32 sound card and Voodoo2
(8Mb). We play GPL often and GPL on his PC does not seem to perform as well as
it should. Will all graphics options on, detail bias in the middle, 4 sounds,
and in 800x600 he does get 36fps in solo play, but when racing against 19
opponents, he gets "only" about 24fps sitting at the back of the grid (at the
start of the race). It can drop to about 19fps at the 1st corner and drops to
about 22fps when there are 3 cars around him in the middle of the race.

That doesn't sound right to me with a machine like his .... I have a PII 300
with 64Mb RAM, SB16 and Thriller3D and with exaclty the same options and under
the same conditions I don't drop bellow 30fsp!?!?

I have even checked his primary bus speed (which is running at 100) and all
his drivers (he has the latest Monster2 drivers). Is this the performance you
guys get with Voodoo2 (8Mb) or is something not running correctly? I'd
appreciate to hear what kind of performance are people with similar systems
getting. Also, if you have any ideas/suggestions then I'd love to hear them.

MAke sure he doesn't have tons of programs running in the background.  Do a
ctrl alt delete until only explorer and systray remain.  It seems as thought
something is bogging it down, and a virus scanner or two in the background
tends to bog things nicely.

Hi!

With a Celeron 300A at 464 mhz and CL V2 SLI 12 mb and SB-Live I get steady
36 fps at all times exept at the back of the grid.

On a V2 you also gain a lot by only showing cars in the mirrors. Also: set
the detail-bias at a low setting.
