I think the hairpin is correct, but that turn-7/8 (just prior to)
are off.

Actually, the hairpin is in reality a U-turn on Shoreline Dr.  Shoreline is
a divided road with a center median about a car length wide.  This median
separates pit row from the front straight.  In ICR1/2, the inside of the
hairpin can fit 2+ cars lengthwise, which is much too big.  The track will
be even more outdated since 1999 will see a reconfiguration near the
Aquarium of the Pacific...

You're correct about the turn and the median it circles.  However,
the width of the median at this section is only about 3-or 4 feet,
and (as memory serves) widens only after the turn-in for Shoreline
Village (just wide enough for a palm).

Another item I forgot about is that the elevation changes a bit, and
the front straight is actually higher than the pit row surface.

If the track is this wide here, than it is way off.

Making a left instead of the usual right!  I was sad to watch crews
cementing the new curbs and walks at turn-1 (my office only a couple
blocks away), and knew the track was history.  This only 3-days after
the GP.  I can't wait to see next year's event though!  =)

Cheers!

I saw the track diagram in my ticket package for next year. My favorite
spectating area is history! (Turns 1-2-3)

Marc, can you tell from the construction if they are running the course in
front of the aquarium or around behind it?

There's gonna be some pissed off fishies that weekend!

As far as I can remember (from the LB Chamber yackity-yack), the track
will turn left to go in front of the aquarium, around the lagoon in
a wide right circle, come-back behind the PA building, and rejoin the
track at turn 4.  Subtract about 150 yards from the old layout, but add
a huge chunk from turn 1 to 4, making it about 2 miles total.

The aquarium plays a recording of CART engines for a full week prior
to the event, increasing the volume each day to about half of what a
normal car would sound...all to get the creatures used to hearing
the cars come race day.  Odd to hear these screaming engines when
no one's even about!

Cheers!

I think if the ICR2 hairpin was correct, it would make Long Beach even more
exciting to race at than it already is.

Personally, I would modify it myself, but I don' t yet understand the trk.

The newest issue of Racer Magazine has the layout of the new track in it. It
looks to be slower, and has an awful kink right about where the aquarium is.
Why
couldn't they keep the old track?
