GPL or F1RS??

GPL or F1RS??

by Bruce Schult » Fri, 29 Jan 1999 04:00:00

I've played GP2 for years and I've just got a 3D card and can only afford
one game for a while, so should I get GPL or F1RS first?

Thanks

Bruce,
As this group has almost turned into a GPL appreciation society, you'll get
hundreds of 'GPL is the only sim that should grace your PC' type mails.
It's not true. I've been playing both GPL and MGPRS2 (forget F1RS now that
MGPRS2 exists) and both have their merits. They are both excellent at what
they do. I think that when MGPRS2 is released in USA in Feb, then you will
see more posts about it.
It's simple, if you want to race in the 60s with superb graphics and great
physics, then go for GPL. If you want the precision and accuracy of 90s
Formula One, then go for MGPRS2.
OK?

Why not download the demo for both, and see which one you like best?
Only you can decide which one is best for you.

I agree about forgetting F1RS, but disagree about both being excellent.  MGPRS2
IS out in the US (got mine at EB for $19.95), and while it's improved from
F1RS, it's just not on the same planet as GPL.  The only argument I could see
that would favor MGPRS2 is if your CPU/Graphics Card isn't up to GPL's needs.
But then I still prefer GPL on my lowly 200MMX/Voodoo2, even with a lot of the
graphics turned down and small fields.  When you consider the following GPL has
inspired, with the various utilities/editors that are in the works, you know
which has inherited GP2's place(for now).  Paul Hoad's editor in particular is
looking better every day.

Only you can decide which one is best for you.<

There's some wisdom.  Just be sure to get the 18mb GPL demo from Papy.com that
allows setup adjustments, as the earlier demo doesn't do justice to the game.

Cheers,

Steve B.

Well, depends on what kind of system you got there. If you prefer
playing a modern F1 game with a full field (as you probably did with
GP2) and a reasonable graphics quality you don't have many
alternatives here. But I wouldn't recommend F1RS, take MGPRS instead,
it's way better in all aspects (ummm....somehow I have a feeling that
the usual jerk will pop up trying to pretend the contrary).
On the other hand, if all you want is an as accurate as possible
simulation of a 67 F1 car you might consider GPL. Just keep in mind
that you should better have a *fast* PII if you want the full
competition and graphics and sound.

Depends. If you're looking for a REAL sim -> get GPL. There's nothing
better out yet ;-)

F1RS (or its successor RS2) has better grafics (esp. in 3dfx-mode) but
it's not as challeging as GPL is, IMHO.

Also, man mailt sich...

Not as challenging! You must be playing a different set of software. I can
get pole position in GPL at Monza and the Glen - the 2 tracks I most use -
with no problem at all, but I am lucky to get half way up the grid in
MGPRS2! and that's after many weeks of practising. (F1RS was easy to get
pole.)
