What happend to the WSC demo?

by David Mocna » Tue, 07 Aug 2001 17:31:19

Last year (Septemmber), there was talk from West Brothers about how the WSC
is 'almost there' and that they want to have a demo with one track (Monza)
and one car (Panoz) out in a few months. Well, it's been almost a year and
there's still no demo? Why is that?

I though that the way GPL demo was released way before the actuall release
date was an excellent way to market it as well as excellent way to get some
feedback and beta test it. So why no WSC demo? Were they full of it a year
ago and the game was nowhere close to being packaged as a demo? It's almost
a year since I read the demo 'promise' so what is going on?

David Mocnay

Your guess is as good as anyones.  These things take time.

If it was such excellent marketing technique - then why the***poor sales.
You're right - however - that getting an early - but limited demo out should
help guage public opinion and eliminate any hardware problems before the
actual release - so they dont have to patch it for bugs within a fortnight!

Anyway - while you're waiting for WSC - go play N4 and learn what a tyre
model is. Those who've played GPL for a few years should get a shock round
the road courses.

The cars handle as would have expected them to handle, which is a nice
surprise, not a shock. Why should experienced GPL racers (or any other
experienced simracers) be shocked by the handling in N4?

And licensing.

Perhaps to root out this rumour (if a post can do that); it seems that
GPL didn't do that shitty after all. According to Dave Kaemmer it did
very well, but Nascar does better, and Sierra determines what is to be
done. So Nascar it is. In other words, a GPL2 might not be impossible,
but unlikely while the Nascar series do much better.

You mean it's shockingly easy when compared with GPL?

Actually, it's a misnomer to say that GPL doesn't have a tyre-model.  It's
calculating the grip the tyre gives based on it's angle to the direction of
travel, speed of rotation, pressure, tire temperature (etc) so of course it
has a tyre model.  It would be more accurate to say that N4 has a *better*
tyre-model since it models tyre wear.  GPL doesn't have a 'tyre-wear' model.

I've said this before and I'll say it again:

In a NASCAR sim they are TIRES.

NASCAR TIRES are made by the Goodyear TIRE and *** company, not the
Goodyear TYRE and *** company.

Are you sure about that?  I've read an interview with DK where he expressed
real dissapointment with GPL sales.  I'll dig up the link if anyone want to
read it for themselves.

model.

I may be wrong... but isn't this in part due to the durability of GPL-era
tires?  I understand that one set of tires could last a *very* long time
compared to modern ones so wouldn't tire-wear be an unnecessary thing to
model in detail for GPL?

Just to confuse things further, I believe there is such a thing as a
"tire"[sic] in UK English - it's a band of metal placed around the rim
of a wheel in order to strengthen it.

And we'll start referring to NASCAR "tires" when you start referring to
GPL "tyres", OK?
