The first thing to realise is that DirectX imbeds itself DEEPLY into the
operating system and that it was designed to stay there unless replaced by a
newer version. It touches most aspects of your machine operation on one way
or another. Removing an installation of DirectX so it can be replaced with
an older version is possible but risky. There is no such thing as a reliable
removal method. Look at it as kind of like playing Russian Roulette. With
only one loaded chanber you will probably be OK but if you do lose you will
lose BIG!! No removal should be attemtped unless you are prepared reformat
that day should the attempt fail.

Having said that you can look for removal tools on "majorgeeks.com" or do a
google search.

Why don't you like DX9? Going back to 8.1 will provide no benefits. There is
nothing wrong with DX9.0a.

In 5 years of PC ownership, with various configurations of
processors/motherboards/ram/vid cards etc. etc. etc., I have never had a
problem with any DirectX version. I've installed them all (no betas,
natch). I can never understand the resistance to new versions of DX. I'm
not saying that people don't have problems with it, but to me, it
*seems* likely that it is at the users end. I've been wrong before,
*many* times, so I'll freely admit to being wrong here.

Having said that, doesn't it depend a little bit what a certain version of
DX is being used for? My GrandPrix 4 game for instance states that it is
written for DirectX 8.1 and comes with it. It appears unreliable, crashes
a lot under DirectX 9.0, which could be a number of things, e.g. I'm
running DirectX under Win2K, maybe it is really written for XP?
The thing would be to find out: is DirectX backwards compatible?
