Finding Modem in Win95 dos

I'm trying to get to the NASCAR on-line racing.  I recently purchased
and installed a new modem.  When I access the modem through the dos
prompt while WIN95 is running, I have no problem accessing, I just can't
run the game.  When I shut-down and restart in DOS mode, I can't detect
the modem.  Any suggestions???
